| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The two applicants | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Firstly, both of us want a dog. We would like a PWC because we believe they are a great dog and a good breed to “begin” with. We both had dogs growing up but have not yet had one of our own. We believe the breed to be a good option for a first dog because of their wonderful temperament, their smarts and trainability, and their size. We have a cat and plan to get more cats and dogs and corgis generally have great attitudes towards other animals. We also have young ones in our lives and plan on having children within the next 5 years and trust the corgi as a breed. Also they are the cutest dogs on earth! I have known a few individuals with corgis and have loved their dogs. My dogs growing up we’re Jack Russell Terriers who have a fair amount in common with the corgi, so I feel comfortable with having one.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Everything – we are *those* animal people. Even our car is leash trained and goes for walks. We want to take our pup on our vacations with us when we go camping!
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||
|
Money for basic care? |
Yes | ||||||
Money for unforeseen medical expenses? |
Yes | ||||||
Willing to house train? |
Yes Willing to do formal training? Yes |
||||||
|

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I guess I’m not sure how to answer this question… I think of dogs as like children so I would try to teach my dog to not repeat the mistake.
Discipline: |
Firm words, I have learned some submission tactics in the past for both my dogs and cats so that they will listen without me having to yell or hit (as I do not want to do these things to an animal unless I absolutely had to for whatever reason). Crating when the dog will not listen at all or has put themselves in a dangerous position. I plan to do more research on discipline for the specific breed once we have a better idea of what dog we will get, since we want a corgi but are open to other dog breeds as well.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Most of the time would be spent in our home.

||||||
|
House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Not every day, no. I create most of my own work schedule so I plan on initially working all evenings when we get a dog so it can healthily acclimate and be trained, and to provide supervision to its interactions with our cat. We would go from there based on the animal’s needs, most likely gradually increasing the amount of time spent alone each day. At most, the dog would be alone for 7.5-8 hours on days where we both worked during the day. But, I plan to avoid this!
Where would dog eat? |
Right now our animal food dishes are in the kitchen/dining area. I imagine they would stay there or move to the laundry room if for some reason that were necessary.
Where would dog sleep: |
Wherever it would like to in our home. We allow our animals on the sofa and beds. We also would purchase or create a bed purely for the corgi so it would have the option of it’s own space.
Play & exercise: |
We have a yard the corgi can play in. We frequently go for walks around the neighborhood, to parks, and in local nature centers and would bring the dog with us. We have a 3 bedroom single family home, so there is plenty of room to run and play inside as well. The dog will get plenty of time for play and excercise since we will go out everyday with it, play inside with it, and give it the option of playing in the yard. We would also take it to visit other family with dogs to play together.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
|
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
Most of the yard is fenced with a privacy fence that is over 6 feet tall and wood. There is a portion that is chain link because the driveway goes into the garage in the backyard, so this part of the fence can open and close.

Who is this dog for? |
Myself! | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I've always had a dream to have one! I'm a petite individual and I wanted a petite dog like me. I have lots of energy to move and I'm constantly either rock climbing, camping, or biking. Corgis tend to have to energy and agility to keep up with me. I'm also a person that loves to relax at home and read a book sometimes, so once these guys are tuckered out we can nap together. I've gone to a few corgi meet-up events and have witness a variety of personalities, which I love too! I've conversed with owners on how they have trained their dogs, what are some activities they do with their dog, and how they interact with other animals. All encounters have been positive.

I would definitely let it run around the dog park, go camping with it, and get it moving outside!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I've been training my cat, so when she does something bad I use the same words and noises (NO followed by a loud hand clap). I try to condition this into them to make sure they know that if they do something wrong.
Discipline: |
Positive reinforcement if they are doing something good, like treats and toys. I also use their name and say certain phases so they will know they have done something good. If they do something bad, I will tell them no and not give treats.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Mostly in my apartment, the backyard of my complex (we have 8 units), and outside with me when I go on errands

Both of us | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have researched the breed and spoken friends who are owners. Our last dog of 16 years was a Lancashire Heeler named Dynamite, so we are accustomed to very vocal, active, and somewhat independent pets.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We are used to 20 minute walks three times a day, some ball playing, and scent games. Since we are retired our dog goes with us most of the time., even on errands, and always when we travel. We winter in Arizona December-April and our dog goes with us.

We have a 3.5 year-old and newly 1 year-old who love animals (they adore our cats, and visiting with my brother and sister-in-law's three Pugs and my mother-in-law's two Shiba Inus and two Rottweilers). Our ideal dog would be very comfortable around young children and other animals.
We know we are looking for a bit of a "unicorn" pem, but we are in no rush. We would much rather wait a couple years for the dog that best fits our family than to rush into a dog that may be more comfortable in another home. |

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
For our family, though our 3.5 year-old son will certainly want to feel like a dog is for HIM specifically.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Having previously owned Shibas, we're accustomed to (and prefer!) bossy dogs with big personalities. We love that Pembrokes are independent and intelligent "big dogs in little bodies", who enjoy being part of a loving family. From our research (and we've done lots!), we feel a Pembroke Welsh Corgi could do well in our home – keeping an active lifestyle, but rarely being left alone, and having some tolerance for little people (even if they end up occasionally herded!).
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would love to play at home (including some basic training and perhaps simple tricks, if the dog is inclined), as well as walk, hike, and run with us.
Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs? |
Yes | ||||||

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
When relevant, we would do a calm but firm no, followed by redirection and positive reinforcement (via treats, praise, etc.) when the desired behavior is shown instead.
Discipline: |
We have had success training with redirection and position reinforcement, though we are always open-minded to learning more methods.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Primarily with me (and other members of the family when they are home) in and around our home.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes, excluding errands and occasionally helping out for a few hours at our children's preschool, I am home the majority of the day.
Where would dog eat? |
We would use a quiet area just off our bathroom where the dog could eat in peace (and away from little fingers!).
Where would dog sleep: |
Wherever preferred by the dog, though it would be our default to start with a cozy bed in our room unless a crate is necessary (a crate would likely fit best into the playroom near our bedroom).
Play & exercise: |
I'd love a dog who would happily walk the kids to school with me (~2.25 miles round trip), as well as other walks around our neighborhood (we do live downtown, so a dog that is comfortable with that is ideal), and perhaps also runs and longer hikes.

|
Who is this dog for? |
Me and significant other.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My brother has a wonderful Corgi, named Bucky. When he adopted Bucky, my whole family fell in love with the breed. He is actually now a certified therapy dog that goes to nursing homes and hospitals. He is energetic, fun-loving, and a dorky dog. I have learned a lot about the breed through further research and through my experiences with my brother and Bucky. If I were to get any breed of dog, corgis are at the top of my list.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We would go on nice short walks and lounge around the house. I plan to have him/her travel with us to visit friends and family. I would love to him/her to dog parks. If the personality is fit for therapy dog life, I would love to train and certify the dog to give back to the community. As a nurse, I have seen the wonderful impact that dog therapy has for patients and myself.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would not yell at the dog, because that makes them anxious and confused. For example, if the couch is torn up, there is not much we can do – its already torn up and yelling at the dog is going to make them upset, anxious, and confused. Instead, I would refocus the dog away from the mistake and praise them when they perform good deeds to help the dog understand good behavior.
Discipline: |
Main thing is to not confuse the dog with praise for bad behavior. Refocusing the dog is key.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Most of the time the dog would be with us inside or outside. If we are out and about without the dog, we plan to have the dog be able to roam about in the living space.

We have an open concept living space. We plan to have the bowls near the kitchen.

We plan to have a dog bed in the bedroom, but we would like to see how the dog interacts and figure out where the dog would be comfortable. I know dogs that find comfort in their kennel if that is what they are used to, or they might like a dog bed. So this we would have to play by ear.
Play & exercise: |
There are a lot a nice trails and dog parks in the area. We would take the dog outside frequently throughout the day. I would love for the dog to play with other dogs by meeting up with our family and friends' dogs, as well as dogs at the dog parks.

Who is this dog for? |
Myself and my two children (12 and 17)
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My daughter has been obsessed with this breed for years, to the point where she tears up with joy! I started researching the breed last year and enjoy the thought of having a companion breed who loves to snuggle as well as play and exercise. We had rescued a chihuahua and I loved having a smaller dog and really miss his company.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walk! I need a walking companion and I plan to make him or her my travel buddy when I leave the house to be social with friends. Most of my friends have dogs and I’d like to be able to join them at the dog park.

My chihuahua was temperamental and often tested boundaries. I make time to train my dogs to correct behavior. My pets are like my children, no corporal punishment in my home.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
I work about 4-5 hours per day outside of my home. While I am gone he will likely be “kenneled” in the kitchen area in case of accidents. (The floor is easy to clean in there). Otherwise he will be free to roam the home.
