Me and my fiance' | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My fiance' Kellie loves Corgis in particaular because of their cute stubby legs, and they are for the most part a naturally playful breed. They are also very loving, which is the main thing she needs.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Give a firm "no", but not too harsh, as to not make the dog scared/fearful. If for example, he/she makes a mess in the house, look at him with a little disappointment, and give a firm, but gentle, "No" as you look at him/her, and then take him/her outside to help him learn from his/her mistakes.
Discipline: |
Spray bottles could be used in some situations, with a very light mist, but I guess it would depend on the breed and temperament of the dog. My previous asnwer of using a firm but gentle "no" could work, or you could use the "sit" command as a distraction from the "bad" thing he/she is doing. But again, I guess it really depends, each dog is different.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Probably outside in the yard running/ playing.

Outside dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes, usually there is someone home for some/most of the day. The longest anyone would be gone at any given time may be 3 or 4 hours.
Where would dog eat? |
There would probably be a set place in the house that is away from the dinner table so he/she doesn't beg/expect food when we sit down to eat (personal preference)
Where would dog sleep: |
Wherever he or she feels comfortable to sleep. On the couch, in the bed, or I would invest in a nice padded dog bed.
Play & exercise: |
I go out frequently to parks/the beach, and if a companion would join us, in the future, definitely a not so crowded dog park (at first)

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
This dog is for myself, Carolyn Elias and my husband, Stephen Crabtree.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We would like to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi for a number of reasons 1. We would prefer to adopt than get a dog through a breeder. We are wary of getting a dog through a backyard breeder, of which there seem to be many in Minnesota. 2. We would like to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because we feel it would be the best breed for our family. We would like an active, intelligent, trainable dog. We like corgi's because they are sport dogs and (at least the ones in the local kennel and racing clubs) very good with other people and kids. 3. We have a yard, but it isn't huge so we want a dog that can be exercised in our yard on those cold, Minnesota days that a long walk isn't possible. 4. We want a dog that bot of us can walk. My husband is a over 6 ft tall and strong enough to handle a medium to large size dog….I am not. Since the dog will primarily be my responsibility during the day I need to be able to walk it. 5. The potential for racing and other club sports. We like the camaraderie of a sporting dog. 6. They are cute! 7. We have friends that own corgi's and we love them. 8. Scientific studies have shown that Corgi's and Maine Coon cats get along very well. |
||||||

1. Racing 2. Camping 3. Swimming 4. Hiking/walks 5. Frisbee 6. Couch cuddles 7. Obedience training |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I am not sure if "mistake" means something like doesn't follow a command of something more serious like destroys something. We are planning to use positive reinforcement training method to train our dog. So if it something like doesn't follow a command then he or she doesn't get a treat or or praise. If the infraction is more serious then he or she will get a 30 second time out in a room away from toys and food and then let out and we go about our day as usual. Using the command "no" in a stern voice will be important so that the dog can recognize displeasure. |
||||||
Discipline: |
See above. | ||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our house and backyard. We are planning to crate train our dog at night.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes, I work from home so there will almost always be a person home with him or her. We also have a cat sitter and dog walker who works with the local humane society that takes care of our cats while we are away – say for like a day trip or weekend.
Where would dog eat? |
We have a furnished mudroom where we currently have our cats food and litter box, we were planning on feeding him or her there as well unless he or she has food aggression issues, other wise we have a little alcove in our dining area we can set up food.
Where would dog sleep: |
If the dog can be crate trained to sleep in it's crate that would be ideal or on a doggy bed. However, if it likes to sleep in a bed with people, it can try to find a space on our bed with us and the two Maine Coon's. (We might have to find a bigger bed, if that's the case)
Play & exercise: |
We have thought about this a lot. We have a yard to play in, although it is currently not fenced. (we are looking into an inground fence) We live next door to a school and they have a little dog/ kid play area out front. There is a community playground/ baseball field/ park that is about three blocks away. We will be utilizing these spaces to run around, play frisbee, etc. There is a large lake with a dog run a few blocks away as well. So if we can train the dog to swim then we would take it there. We are also interested in having our dog participate in the local corgi racing society were they do racing (obviously) as well as meetups and play dates and social/ fundraising events in the community. Some are exercise focused and some are just social. The amount of exercise corgi's need varies so we are planning to give them as much exercise as they need or are tired. |

Our backyard currently has a patio with furnishings and a grill. There is a fire pit, built out of stone and sand. At te back of they yard we have a wood pile, compost pile and flower bed that about a barn that is converted into a garage. We have a brick walkway hat leads from our back door to our paved driveway. In the back yard there are a few large trees. We have flower beds- mostly filled with hostea's around the perimeter of the house. The front yard there are two large trees, one of which has a spinning wind chime. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Just talk to him and show him with authority but at the same time with love that it made a mistake and maybe put some restrictions with things the dog likes to do for short periods of time, so the dog understands that is not correct and he won’t to do it again
Discipline: |
Comands, talking to him, use a newspaper roll as a sign of authority but not using physical contact with him to avoid aggression and attitude changes or traumas in the dog, the most effective of course would be professional training before any other methods

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I enjoy the spunkiness that many Pembroke Welsh Corgi's have! I also prefer a dog/ dog breed that wants a lot of affection, as I enjoy giving dogs a ton of affection and attention. At the animal shetler I have been volunteering at throughout college, the dogs I enjoyed working with most were often some sort of corgi mix.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walks around the neighborhood, going to the dog park, doggie play dates (if they like other dogs), chew toys, treat games & bones for when I will be gone for a few hours.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The Pembroke would be for myself, but my roommate will assist in its care.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I want to adopt a PWC because ever since I saw the Queen of England with her corgis, I knew it was my dream dog. Corgis have everything I have ever wanted in a dog: short legs, long bodies, tall ears, big attitudes, and playful personalities. I have done research on them and know about their herding tendencies, shedding levels, and common health issues that arise due to their anatomy. I have puppy-sat corgis on rare occasions in the past as well as attended corgi gatherings (e.g. Corgis and Cupcakes, etc).
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I think it would be important to regularly walk with the corgi and let him/her socialize with other dogs. I live in the Third Ward in Milwaukee which is rich with dog-friendly neighbors, parks, restaurants, and shops. Indoors (and more frequently in the winter), I would have toys and treats to keep him/her entertained. In low-energy times, my lap will always be open and I will provide the corgi with all the blankets and plushy areas he/she needs to wind down.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
First, I would focus on rewarding positive behavior and teaching my corgi via rewards. I also understand that a dog's negative behavior requires adjustment on my part, like keeping things I don't want eaten out of reach of the dog. For in-the-moment negative behaviors, I would verbally reprimand and redirect the behavior elsewhere, like giving him/her something appropriate to chew on, moving him/her to another room if they're barking at something or someone, etc. |
||||||
Discipline: |
Positive reinforcement (and corresponding reward withholding for negative behavior), verbal reprimanding, behavioral redirect.
I would never EVER use physical violence (hitting, kicking, etc) as a form of discipline. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
The Pembroke would likely spend most of his/her time indoors or on our patio, however we live very close to multiple dog parks, trails, bike paths, etc. that would serve as unique venues for entertainment and exercise.

||||||
|
House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
No, but we have relationships with our neighbors and family members that live nearby that would be able to check in in case of an emergency. I also plan to install a puppy cam.
Where would dog eat? |
Main meals will be served in the kitchen. If the corgi needs to be crated during the day, there will also be food and water there (and enough space so as not to crowd him/her during the day).
Where would dog sleep: |
Hopefully in my room or our living room, but during the initial crating period (if needed) or if negative behaviors persist, then in a larger crate or pen.
Play & exercise: |
Our neighborhood has excellent paths for walking and multiple dog parks, so there are a multitude of places to take the corgi so he/she will never be bored. I will regularly walk the corgi and extended play time will come after work and on weekends.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
At home, during the work day, at evenings can be in different activities and of course the regular walks for fun and it needs

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The dog is for family. We have a 12 yr old Pembroke that we adopted from you in 2009. She's getting old and needs a companion.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have a pembroke. We love their playful, smiley spirit and size. Easy to train and good temperment. Unfortunately, she is pretty blind and deaf now so less playful. She is too attached to one family member so that is frustrating.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Lots of walks. Ball tossing. Some agility work is fun. We did that with our current dog a few times when she was younger and she was very good.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Tell it no if we catch it in the act. Change the situation so it is less likely to happen again (move the item to a safer place if it destroyed something) or put the dog in a separate place so it can't happen again.
Discipline: |
verbal commands for positive and negative. treats for rewards
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
at home… When we are at work, she may be isolated in an area or crate if not house trained. It might come to work with me. I own a business.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Elke and myself. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We are looking for a small breed dog that will fit in well with our apartment (~1,100 sq ft). Pembrokes peaked our interest because of their high intelligence and adaptibility. I want a dog that I can train well but is also playful. We have played with Pembrokes in the past but haven't decided to adopt one until recently.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We love walking on trails and would bring our Pembroke with us as we are surrounded by dozens of paved trails. There are also a couple dog parks nearby that we would visit. I work from home so would be able to care for a dog 24/7. Elke and I work somewhat opposite schedules so there would always be someone available to provide affection to our dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If the Pembroke makes a mistake like going to the bathroom inside, we would show our disapointment and move them outside. We would make a routine of praise the Pembroke for correct behavior rather than scolding it for mistakes.
Discipline: |
We would try to convey our dissapointment in our tone and facial expressions or reward him/her for positive behavier.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our Pembroke would primarily be a house dog with lots of opportunites to play outside.

Yes. I work from home. | ||||||

The kitchen has plenty of space and the corgi could have its own area for food and water.
Where would dog sleep: |
We have a spare bedroom that we could use for our dog.
Play & exercise: |
I have multiple breaks throughout the day that I will used to go on walks or play with my corgi. Elke and I would take the corgi to dog parks and walks on trails. We also love the beach and exploring in general. A corgi would be a great companion for us and we would provide a ton of attention.

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
My girlfriend and I have been talking about bringing a corgi into our home for the last year and I’d like to finally make that happen. Her childhood dog is getting pretty old and I think bringing in a new member of the family would really help. I’ve ALWAYS loved them and Kelly is equally in love with them.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I’ve always loved the breed. They’re wonderful energy and intelligence has always been something I love about them as well as the fact that they’re the cutest. I think that their adaptability to city life and how well trained they can be are other factors as well. I love their big smiles and the strut in their step. Our neighbor has a corgi, Chip, and he is the sweetest boy. We’ve definitely done our research as well as talked to our friends/neighbor who currently have Corgis.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walks to the park, trips to the lake, and more. Kelly’s parents have a boat on Lake Michigan as well as a lake house where we’ll be able to take our Corgi out to sea. Lots of cuddling and playing when it gets cold out.

No. Both of us work during the week. We might hsve Kelly’s parents watch them after they retire in a couple years.

Where would dog sleep: |
We have a massive crate from her parents that we’d use at first but eventually we’d love to have a pet sleep with us. Probably sooner than later if I’m being honest.
Play & exercise: |
Doggie daycare is plenty of playing with other dogs and a good source of excersize but on top of that Kelly and I are both very active people. Kelly is currently training for a marathon and I play tennis and volleyball weekly. We both lift weights and try to walk everywhere we go. Also, we’re both kids at heart so our dog will be played with constantly!
