Who is this dog for?

My boyfriend and I, we have been considering a dog for a long time and are now in the place financially that we can commit to one.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My boyfriend and I both have met people with Pembroke Welsh Corgis before and we like that they're affectionate and intelligent. We also like that they typically do well with other dogs and with children because eventually we intend to buy a house and expand to more than one pet. In addition, when we travel to visit relatives we hope to bring our pet with us rather than boarding or hiring a pet sitter so based on our research a Corgi may have the adaptability to be comfortable in those situations.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Our apartment complex as a large grassy area so we would plan to walk around outside with our Corgi, the complex isn't fenced so this would be on a leash. Also, there are several parks nearby with trails we could walk and grassy areas to play in. We also have a large living room where we would be able to play with toys and cuddle.

Vet contact info:

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would tell the dog no, and be consistent about what is and is not allowed in the household.

Discipline:
In my research with Corgis I read that its best to establish yourself as the leader of the "pack" and make it clear that your orders are to be followed. Since this would be my first time owning a dog as an adult I would probably start with obedience classes and follow the recommendations that the instructor makes.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our apartment, of which they would have free range minus the kitchen. It is very small and I won't want them to form a habit of being underfoot in such a dangerous room.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Unfortunately, no. My boyfriend works 9am-7pm and I work 10am-630pm. So the dog would be alone Tuesday-Friday during those hours. We are both home on Sat and Sun and my boyfriend is home on Mondays as well.

Where would dog eat?
We would keep their food/water in the "dining room" section of the living room. They would be able to see us and eat/drink near us the whole time.

Where would dog sleep:
It would depend on their temperament and comfort, sleeping in our bed with us would certainly be an option, or we could employee crate training and they could sleep in their crate in our bedroom.

Play & exercise:
Every day after work one of us would take the Corgi outside while the other one prepares dinner. After dinner, depending on the weather we would play inside with toys or outside in the yard. I also have a couple of friends with dogs and fenced yards in the city so at least once or twice a month we would go over so they could play with the other dogs.

For the family

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have wanted a Corgi my whole life. I love how cute they are and how playful they are. I love that they are a smaller dog which is what I am looking for. I have been trying to find one in a shelter because I believe that adopting a dog is better than buying from a breeder or pet store. They aren’t an easy breed to find at shelters.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I have a fenced in yard so the dog would be able to run free. Also we like to take walks. I work from home so the dog would not be left alone at home a lot.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Most mistakes dogs make are caused by human error. If the dog chews on shoes, the best thing to do is tell the dog no but also make sure the shoes are not left out to be chewed. If the dog steals food, then it could have been caused by one of the kids leaving it out.

Discipline:
Dogs need to be trained. The best thing to do is tell them no and remove them from the environment. It may take multiple times of teaching them something but using positive reinforcement is the best method. Treats for good behaviors always produce positive results.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the house. I work from home and I am home all day.

Who is this dog for?

Me. I have been looking for a dog to adopt/re-home and I found a corgi-Australian shepherd mix I just LOVED but so did many others. I thought I would try your organization to see if you have any corgi's looking for a forever home. I am a very responsible pre-med student with 2 roommates and a boyfriend to help me give lots of love to a four legged friend. I have grown up with dogs all of my life. I am looking for a medium sized dog that would do well in an apartment and is people/dog friendly as I would like to take him/her with me as often as I can. thank you for considering!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My family has german shepherds and i believe the corgi will have some of the same traits as it is a herding dog. I have never owned one but i believe they have similar characteristics of a big dog in a little dog body which is what i need for apartment living.

Who is this dog for?

We are looking for a nice dog for ourselves. I live with my 9 year old daughter and we would much prefer to rescue and animal. We had daschunds in the past and loved having a pet. It’s time to have a pet again as she’s getting old enough to help out with the daily routine of taking care of a friend.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
They are an interesting breed and seem to be very friendly. A dog that enjoys taking walks and being outdoors and is able to handle a cold climate is important. And they are adorable looking dogs too.

It would depend on the dog’s temperament if we would actually do dog parks, some don’t handle them well. We have no pool in the back yard.

Who is this dog for?

Our family. Mike's the Dad who works globally and often from home. Kim's the Mom who works as a controller for a local importer, some days from home. The Corgi baby will go to work with her at her office sometimes The Corgi baby will have a big brother, Logan, who will be a Senior in High School this fall.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We had a beloved Pembroke Corgi, Katherine, in our family for almost thirteen years. This past winter we made the heart-breaking choice to put her down and end her suffering when there was no further treatment for tumors that impeded her airway and medicines no longer kept her comfortable. We had such an appreciation for her "corgi-ness" and aren't considering adopting any other breed as our next dog. When she was gone, it was a learning experience to get through our days without having her directing us in the Corgi-growly talk. Incessant corgi growly talk!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Whatever he or she tells us to! Seriously though, we took our first Corgi walking in the woods, frisbee in the fields, leash-walking in our neighborhood, for rides in the car, walking/tunneling in the snow. For long trips or places where dogs aren't welcome or where she wasn't happy (relatives homes with a no pet policy, or a cousin's home with a pet that our dog wasn't happy spending time with) we hired a family friend to stay home and "Katie-sit" rather than putting her in a kennel. Katie dog HATED the kennel, and would cry when we picked her up. Traumatic for her and for us, so we just didn't take her there.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Work on re-training if the mistake is on-going. Praise and reward good behavior.

Discipline:
Positive and thorough training with treats and positive reinforcement. Redirect to acceptable behavior, e.g., chewing sofa? Supervise and remove her from the sofa area and give her to her acceptable 'chewie' toy. The more time spent training in the beginning, the more well behaved a dog is…plus it just makes a happier family if everyone is well behaved!

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With her family. At home if not able to take her wherever we are.

In a dog bed in her crate when in need of supervision in mom and dad's room, later in a dog bed without the crate in mom and dad's room once mature.

Description of yard:

We live on a large cul-de-sac. The backyard is a wedge shape with natural boundaries…woods in the back, landscaped areas that delineate boundaries. We lived here without a fence for four years with our first corgi, but she was obviously getting older. If our next corgi struggles with respecting the boundaries we would have a fence installed. 'Making a break for it' not an acceptable activity!

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
No other pets; our first Corgi wanted to be the only pet…and we let her be! As we did before, if we wanted to add an additional pet we would attempt to socialize and have peace in the land, but having one happy pet family member is preferred to a houseful of pet strife!

Who is this dog for?

My family and our 4 year old neutered King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. We are looking for a younger spayed female to integrate into our household. Must be housebroken, socialized with other pets and all people, and have decent manners.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have researched the breed and excited about the possibility of finding a rescue female who will fit into our family. We provide a loving, active, and consistent environment for our King Charles. There is always a family member home at all times of the day, so he is very well tended to. We play outside, take walks, responsible car outings, and socialize him with other pets and people regularly.

Who is this dog for?

It is for myself.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My current partner’s family owns a tri-color corgi of this breed and she is the most loving and loyal dog. I have wanted a corgi my entire life but my family ended wanted bigger dogs. I love everything about them! They have great energy, they are active, some like to swim, the are cute as a button, the fluffy butts make me so happy. But I love most is how loyal they are. I have done my fair share of extensive research for the past half decade and know that a corgi is perfect for my life style and what I want in a dog.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We would play in my backyard a lot for sure. It’s big and long in some parts so I would make she my corgi would stay healthy and active. There are lots of parks near me so trips there would happen. Also, trips in the local farmers market and trips to the dog beaches would be a special treat too. If I was ever gone or busy, I have my lovely partner and my roommates to help watch the corgi.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would speak kindly to it and know they have made a mistake and give it the chance to get it right.

Discipline:
I’m not a fan of cages so I would create a closed off area in my home that would be the “time out” spot. Treats would not be given, of course.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Outside. I have a good sized porch with covers shade that looks out over my yard that is gate so I would let my corgi roam where it would like to go. But I would train it to be a house dog since this is Chicago and once winter hits she/he would spend all her time inside. Unless she/he enjoys playing in the snow hahaha.
