| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
This Pembroke will be for my fiance and I–we are ready to expand our family! We are currently the ridiculously-proud owners of a nine-year-old purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Monteverdi. Monte came to me from Kansas in 2009/10. He is a runt (23 lbs) and has been a fabulous 'only child' to Vince and I. Monte loves being around other dogs; we have been considering expanding our family for the last year, and are finally ready to start looking. We would ideally love to find a little brother for Monte to explore and adventure with!
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My fiance and I are absolutely in love with our current Pembroke! We cannot wait to expand our family by adopting our next corgi. We love the breed! My fiance and I have collectively owned dogs of different breeds throughout both of our lives, but none have even come close to matching the personality of the Pembroke. The breed's energy level matches our own, and their perfect balance of watchdog and cuddle-partner cannot be beat! I have owned Monte, my Pembroke, for nine years; I personally trained and house-broke him. My fiance, Vince, and I have been together for two years, during which time he has fallen in love with Monte. After waiting for a year, we are finally ready to expand our family and adopt another corgi.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We take Monte on a walk first thing in the morning for 20-25 minutes. I return home from work by 4:15 PM everyday, and he receives another walk immediately for another 20 minutes. In the summer, we often take Monte for a third walk in the evenings with friends; the new corgi would also participate in these walks. We also take Monte to the beach on weekends to throw balls and swim. Monte has many dog friends that belong to our friends; we often throw 'puppy parties' and bring the dogs together to romp around in our back yards. In the summer, my fiance and I travel to Michigan and Indiana to visit family on their farms. Monte and our new corgi would come and have the run of the many acres we own.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We have found the clicker training method to be EXTREMELY effective with training corgis. When our corgi behaves poorly, we quickly correct the behavior with a firm 'NO'; we do not harp on the mistake, as our dog is intelligent enough to understand his error. When our corgi does an action or responds correctly to a situation, we quickly 'click' our clicker and offer a treat, pets and praise. In this way, Monte has quickly learned to associate the sound of the clicker with the correct behavior, and modifies easily into consistently behaving in the manner we wish.
Discipline: |
I have always found that a firm verbal 'NO' was enough to correct a behavior with my current corgi; he is intelligent enough to understand he has made a mistake. We do not physically use force, nor do we feel the need to berate him. In the past, I have owned Rottweilers, another intelligent breed. With my Rottie, I found the 'Caesar Milan' behavioral training method was best. My Rottie could quickly associate a hissing sound with a negative behavior, and could quickly correct herself.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Most of our corgi Monte's time is spent in our apartment on Haddon Street. He has the rule of the house, and is allowed to wander without restrictions during the day while my fiance and I are not home.

During the winter months, we hire people to let our current corgi out of the house during the day to pee. During the summer months, my fiance will home all day on vacation.
Where would dog eat? |
Our corgis would eat together in the kitchen area. We feed Monte twice a day; he receives a mixture of fresh veggies (generally carrots) and Bill Jac food pellets.
Where would dog sleep: |
Our corgi currently sleeps in the bedroom with us, in a kennel a few feet away. Our new corgi would also sleep in the bedroom, in a kennel of their own.
Play & exercise: |
Again, we walk our current corgi at least twice a day for 20-25 minutes at a time. We also play with him upon our arrival home for an hour or so; this is a daily occurrence. Our new corgi would also receive this daily attention.

|
Who is this dog for? |
Me, Caitlin. My parents have corgis and I adore them. Now I'm at a time in my life when it is possible for me to adopt and care for a dog, and I would like for that dog to be a rescued corgi.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
My parents have had three corgis. Their first two corgis, Pearl and Van died from old age (both 13) and a couple of years they adopted Harley, an 11 month old corgi girl. I lived them with my parents for a few years after college, and helped to care for Pearl and Van, including walks and feedings. In fact, Pearl and I were quite attached to one another. I love how intelligent and loyal but playful the breed is. I often went on hikes with Van and Pearl, and was always impressed, despite their little legs, they were always able to keep up. I especially enjoy how sassy Corgi girls are (I can relate 🙂 ) I understand that despite their short stature, Corgis need exercise and activities which for me would be twice daily walks around the neighborhood, and weekend hiking trips, as well as a yard where they can snuffle around and sun bathe, and bark at squirrels.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would never yell at or hit a corgi if it made a mistake. Depending on the mistake, I would correct the corgi's behavior when appropriate using a corrective phrase or body language.
Discipline: |
Corrective phrase ( examples: "leave it" for eating random things off the ground as corgis are wont to do, "that will do" for excessive barking, or "let's go outside" for a catch all for inappropriate behavior.)
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
The corgi would have the full run of the house and would not be restricted to a specific room or floor of the house. For the occasions when I'm not working from home or have an extremely long workday I am looking into doggy daycare options in Indianapolis.

People at home during the day? |
No. Although I do have a flexible work schedule that would allow me to come home for lunch and work from home occasionally.
Where would dog eat? |
In their crate. The crate will either be in the kitchen, living room, or dining room, depending on the size.
Where would dog sleep: |
While the corgi would have its own designated bed, the corgi would be free to sleep wherever the corgi would choose.
Play & exercise: |
Doggy dates with the friends with dogs, there are a couple of dog parks in Indianapolis. During the spring, summer, and fall, I like to go hiking and I would bring the dog along as a companion. Day-to-day, it would probably be twice daily walks, and then lots of toys and ball chasing in the yard. If the corgi is interested, I would be up for some agility training as well. I would just like the corgi to be happy and would find activities that matched with the corgi's personality.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
|
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

The majority of the fence is a 6 ft privacy spot. The access to the driveway and the garbage can is a shorter 4 inch picket fence. The gate door has a latch so that it closes securely.

It's a fenced yard that is quite long that is large enough for to epxlore with a fenced vegetable garden, and a brick patio. There is a shed that has a door that securely latches (so that the corgi would not be able to get to any dangerous chemicals.) No swimming pool. |

Yes, I am willing to use corrective phrases and obedience training to help the Pembroke get along with my cat. Any pets I might had in the future would have to be introduced to the Pembroke and both show no aggression to one another before considering adopting. It would have to be a good "fit."

| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
Myself and my family | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I find Pembroke Welsh Corgis to be incredibly cute, charming, and playful. They are generally energetic and excited and I find that to be adorable. I have serval friends who have Prombroke Welsh Corgis and I instantly fell in love with them all the more since I’ve been able to actually interact with them. I have done some research on the breed, as I do not take the idea of adding another dog to our family lightly but since they’re known to be good around other dogs and animals, I feel like having one would be a perfect fit!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would love to walk my Pembroke around our neighborhood, let them run around in our large, fenced backyard, play with them, and cuddle with them at night.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would reprimand him/her sternly and remind (via physically pointing or continuing to vocally tell them) him/her of the correct action, for example if they did their business in the house, not outside or in a designated spot, I would say ‘no, bad, we potty outside’ or what have you, and point to their business while saying this and then outside when telling them where to go potty.
Discipline: |
A stern tone of voice and a dominant physical stance if I were to be reprimanding him/her, if I was rewarding him/her (which is just as much a part of discipline as reprimands) I would give them treats and positive praise and pats and hugs.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With my family, whether we are outside or inside. If we are gone for, say, school or work then they can use their door to get in and out of the house to do their business (our yard is large and fenced) and there will always be plenty of water for both my Golden Retriever and my Pembroke.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
For most of the day, my family and I are at work or school but my sister and I get home from school at the latest 3:00 pm and we would have left at earliest 7:00 am, so, while there is an 8 hour gap there, my Pembroke could easily get into our fenced yard to use the restroom and there is always plenty of water in the water bowl.
Where would dog eat? |
From a food bowl which is in a designated spot on a mat.
Where would dog sleep: |
That would depend on where he/she wanted to sleep. They could easily sleep upstairs with me and my family in one of our rooms or they could sleep downstairs, where our Golden Retriever chooses to sleep.
Play & exercise: |
As our yard is large and fenced we could simply let the dogs out to play there, if that’s what they wanted, but I would much rather walk them and play with them. I particularly like to wrestle and play with my current dog in our living room and, so long as my corgi was willing to play, I would do the same with my corgi.
How will you exercise your dog? |
On leash | ||||||
|
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
It is an Invisible Fence. Our Golden was trained pretty easily to remain within the borders and has never run off from our yard in the 8 years that we’ve had her.

I would like to find a Corgi who enjoys the company of people and other dogs (we currently have a 6 year old female Collie). I also have two rabbits, so finding a Corgi with a lower prey drive would be important. I adopted a Husky/Corgi mix that got along with rabbits wonderfully, so I know it is possible! 🙂

Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I thoroughly enjoyed my Husky/Corgi mix (Perry) that I adopted. The personality and temperament of Corgis are well suited to me and my family. I enjoyed working with and training Perry – admiring the independence and strong personality while keeping it in check! The energy level of most Corgis is at the perfect place for me. I have done research on the breed.

Positive reinforcement. I show them what I want them to do, and reward them when they do it. Always ending with a a pleasant, positive interaction! They are very smart, they learn quickly (and notice whether you are consistent or not), and they very much want to please. No scolding here, just consistent, firm expectations!
Discipline: |
Same as above – I show them what I want (and reward). I don't scold when I find a mess, I wait for an opportunity to reward good behavior. If something is happening in the moment (whining), I use a verbal "Ah ah" to indicate that it is not acceptable. Barking – I acknowledge what they are trying to tell me, then say "Enough" to let them know that they have done their job. Reasonable barking is okay – I just set limits!

We are also happy to adopt a corgi that isn't full bred…. We really enjoy the Corgi personality, but since showing and/or breeding is not on our agenda, having 'papers' isn't important to us. Corgi's have been part of our lives for over 20 years, and since we only currently have one, we are ready and able to bring another one into our home.

|
Who is this dog for? |
For us, to be a part of our family.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Corgi's have been part of our lives for over 20 years, and since we only currently have one, we are ready and able to bring another one into our home. All our Corgi's have had different personalities. Generally they have all been quite loving towards others, and we love that about them. 2 have been able to be therapy dogs, in different settings.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We enjoy walking outside, and including our dogs in that. When taking a vacation, we sometimes look for places to go that we can bring them along, including (but not limited to) camping. Since I am not working as much now, I would like to use some of my extra time exploring the option of therapy dog activities, IF and when the dog is a fit for it. If therapy doesn't seem a good fit, maybe agility for fun. (I've done both with different dogs we have had)
