Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
It depends on what the dog does.

If they potty indoors, I would point at them, tell the dog, “no”, in a firm voice and take them outside to continue if the dog has to.

I wouldn’t use a kennel unless the dog did something bad like bite a person or tear up something that is not a toy.

– Kennel for a short period of time

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
My dog would be a combination of a house dog and an active dog who will spend many hours outside per day. Outside playing or “helping” while I flip houses.

Who is this dog for?

Our family (two sons, ages 10 and 12).

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have done a lot of research that landed us on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi as the perfect breed for our family. We like the size, intelligence and personality of corgis. We have no experience with this breed other than friends' dogs, but I owned a sheltie for 17 years so I'm used to a herding dog. Our kids are 10 and 12 and able to help care for the dog.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Our kids would like to teach the dog tricks, play with the dog and take the dog on walks. As a family, we would take the dog on trips to visit family (by car) and on our boat in the summer.

Willa is kenneled about 8 hours per day M-F and I would anticipate another dog having a similar routine. We have a fenced backyard and are a mile from the local dog park. I have had 2 WPC before; both passed about 2 years ago so I am familiar with health issues & care. We are financially secure so would be able to properly care for another pet.

Who is this dog for?

Ryan Verkman and Amanda Mathias

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love corgis! I have studied dog breeds since I was a child and have always admired corgis, but my boyfriend is very interested in the breed and the one behind truly behind the application. We love their fun nature and desire to "keep up". I stayed in a home which had a corgi for a short time, and have also spent the last summer working on a farm at which a corgi cross resided, so I am familiar with the breed in person as well.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Lots of outside playtime and inside cuddle time! We have a very active household and frequently go for runs or walks with the dogs. We love hiking and spending time in our large fenced-in backyard. I spend a lot of time working on training with the younger 2 dogs (the golden is seasoned and does not require training sessions) and the cattle dog cross is currently working on his heelwork. The cattle dog/border collie cross has started agility classes as well, so we have a few pieces of agility equipment to play with as well. Ryan plays softball in the summer and we would very much enjoy bringing our corgi to the games! I also have horses and spend a lot of time at the barn, so if his personality allows, we may bring him there as well.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I am under the belief that dogs do not make mistakes on purpose, and if they are exhibiting unwanted behavior, there is a flaw in their training. This leads me to analyze where I left a gap and make additions or corrections to their training sessions.

Discipline:
I primarily use redirection training.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Inside while we are gone, wherever we are when we are home. Kenneled if required, left out if capable.

People at home during the day?
Ryan and I have split shifts. I work mornings to afternoons, he works mid-day to evenings. There is a period of about 5 hours the dogs are left alone. The younger two are kenneled, the golden is left out.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen or dining room.

Where would dog sleep:
In our bedroom on a dog bed.

Play & exercise:
Daily exercise and play! I usually go for a 20-30 minute jog or 30-45 minute walk after work. Each dog gets a minimum 15 minutes individual training sessions (treat-training), minimum 15 minutes individual inside play time (play-training), minimum 30 minutes outside play time depending on the weather – more if it's nice out, less if it's frigid or wet. Constant monitored play time with the other dogs when we are home before quiet time (9pm) if he so chooses.

I'm looking for a Pembroke who can handle being in my condo without me. I work within 10 minutes of my condo and I can regularly come home for lunch. Sometimes though, I'll be at work from 8am – 5pm. When I come home, I'm looking forward to training my Pembroke and being active outside. I have a large green space behind my condo that is dog friendly. I also have a great neighborhood to walk and run around.

Who is this dog for?

This Pembroke Corgi will be for me.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I'm looking for a companion who's intelligent, trainable, and can join me in outdoor activities. I'm attracted to the Corgi breed because they seem to match these characteristics. Although I haven't owned a dog before, I have volunteered at my local Humane Society for a year now. I've interacted with a wide variety of breeds and luckily a few Corgis. I love their sociable personality, their inquisitiveness, and their ability to be active despite being a smaller breed.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
On a daily basis, I'll be getting outside with my Corgi. Even in the winter, I'm very active and get outside every day. I have a big green space behind my condo where dogs can run and play. I look forward to learning how to train my Corgi and I hope to keep him or her mentally stimulated. I also enjoy interacting with dogs, so training will be an important part of our relationship. I also love some downtime around my house, so I'm hoping for a cuddly friend once the day is done.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I'm still a novice to dog training, so I'll be looking forward to getting some expert instruction. My instinct would be to gain the Pembroke's attention in a consistent way that indicates he has made a mistake. I would not yell or physically intimidate the animal. My main goal would be to have a consistent reaction to the Corgi when he or she makes a mistake so they can learn to interpret my interactions.

Discipline:
I would use a change of voice and eye contact to communicate a disciplinary message. I would never harm, yell, or subject my dog to discomfort due to a mistake.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
He or she would spend time in my condo during weekdays. After work, we would train, take a walk, or a short run around my neighborhood and condo green spaces. I would set up the back of my crossover SUV so he or she could securely, safely, and comfortably ride with me to any outdoor activity that I might take part in (usually hiking, short trail runs, and camping). At night, the Corgi would be with me relaxing around the house. During most weekdays, I stay near home after work. On the weekends, I get outdoors and spend time at home. In both cases, the Corgi would be with me most often.

People at home during the day?
There are not people at my home while I'm at work, but I do plan to install some home cameras so I can keep an eye on my Corgi.

Where would dog eat?
He or she would have a food station in my kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
My Corgi would have a comfortable dog bed in my master bedroom.

Play & exercise:
I have a great neighborhood that's very walkable and green spaces for a dog to run in. I would play fetch with the Corgi and find other physical activities that he or she enjoys. I know how important it is for a herding breed to get activity. It's in their blood, just like being active and getting outdoors is in mine. Once my Corgi is ready to socialize with other dogs, I would take him or her to our local dog parks too.

How will you exercise your dog?

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I love the breed because they are intelligent and playful. I like that they are small enough to have anywhere.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would speak to it in a stern voice, show it what it did wrong and then place it in its kennel for a reasonable amount of time.

Discipline:
I kennel train so that if they make a mistake they will have a time out of sorts. I also use a different voice when disciplining than I do when commending or playing with the dog.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The Pembroke would spend its time in the same room as me when I am home. When I first get the dog it will be in a kennel when I am not home just until I can ensure that it is house broken and will not chew anything up. After I feel comfortable with it’s training, it will be free to roam the apartment when I am not home.

Who is this dog for?

Me and my family.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Our family dog of 15 years, Paco Francis (aka Frank), was a Corgi mix. We loved his personality, how he used to herd our children and their friends when they were young, and what a loyal and protective member of our family he was. Frank was like a baby to me and I miss him so much. It makes me happy when I see dogs that remind me of him. Since he was mostly Corgi, I find myself drawn to other Corgis. I don't care if they are full breeds or mutts.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Take walks around our neighborhood, snuggle at home together on the couch, go for drives with the window down, go to the beach.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would try to evaluate what led to him/her making the mistake and address that. If the mistake was the fault of the dog, then I would communicate to him/her that the action was not acceptable. That could be by an assertive verbal command or hand gesture expressing displeasure. If the mistake were something for which there was a right or wrong way to do something, then I would try to redirect the dog to the right way. For example, if the dog wets the rug in the house, I would immediately take him/her outside to the area s/he is supposed to use.

Discipline:
For dogs who can hear, I express my displeasure through my tone of voice. If the dog is on a leash and does something wrong, I pull back on his/her leash.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
This would depend on what s/he would enjoy doing. Our dog now loves to be outside so she is on a long lead in the yard for most of the day. When she's not outside, she freely roams around the house. Our other dog preferred to be inside and followed me around from room to room. We do not have off-limits areas inside our house as we consider our dogs to be part of the family so they go where the family goes.
