| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The pembroke is for myself primarily (Alyssa), being a recent college graduate (upon completion of student teaching), the time is perfect to adopt a corgi. I will be home with the dog to help train and care for the dog throughout the spring. After spring, my father is retiring (also a teacher), and will be home for the dog so s/he will not be lonely. Corgis truly bring so much joy to my life and after extensive research, the breed is a perfect match for myself and my family. I look forward to taking the pup on hikes, to the beach, for plenty of play time, and lots of training. Thank you for your consideration .
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
First and foremost, you can't not smile when looking at a corgi. They are playful, lovable, smart, and caring pups. In addition, the breed itself is perfect for our short legged family (no joke, we are all 5'5 and under. LOL). I have wanted a dog for as long as I can remember and will be getting a corgi as my college graduation gift. After much consideration, this is the perfect time for my family and I to get a dog. I will be out of work in the spring to help train the dog, and my dad will be retiring from his job as an educator in the spring. This not only ensures that there is someone home with the dog, but most of the extensive training will have been done in the first 6 months.
Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with corgis themselves, but after extensive research and talking with other corgi owners (yup, I'm that girl that will run out of a car to peta corgi), they seem like the perfect fit for my lifestyle. |

Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Ideally I am looking for a companion and (wo)man's best friend. I would ensure that the corgi is being exercised daily and look forward to plenty of nature walks near my house. I also look forward to taking the pup to play at the beach and for lots of car rides with open windows and lots of snuggles and animal planet watching!
I would ensure that the pup is properly trained and would be very interested in getting the dog to either be a therapy dog or emotional support animal. I truly believe that dogs have a way of being there for support, and would love to explore training to help others. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
The goal is to teach the dog the proper behavior prior to making mistakes. But, as always, mistakes happen. I personally feel like pups act out based on their surroundings. For example, if shoes are left out, obviously the dog will chew them. To help combat this, I will ensure all chewable items are moved out of the dog's way and ensure that my Pembroke has lots of toys to play with! I come from a very peaceful family who does not believe in "raising your voice" so that being said, I would remove the pup from the situation and encourage the dog to take a timeout in the cage.
Discipline: |
I would ensure that the dog is properly trained with basic commands. IF needed, I would distract my Pembroke with a toy or utilize "time outs".
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
My Pembroke would spend most of their time hanging out with the family in our living room and kitchen. We have an open concept floor plan and large family room for the pup to play and sleep.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes! I will be home for the spring months and my dad will be staying at home after he retires in June!
Where would dog eat? |
My pembroke would eat with us in the kitchen! We have lots of space for food and water bowls!
Where would dog sleep: |
This is still to be decided! I have researched all of the benefits of crate training and having the dog sleep in their crate. But I would not want my pup to be lonely during the night so I would be open to having the pup sleep in my room with a pet bed. Obviously I want to do what is best for my dog and will accommodate so he/she is happy and healthy.
Play & exercise: |
LOTS of walks! For sure once in the morning and once in the evening! During the day, there will be lots of time for play and lots and lots of toys! We live in a very wooded area, so I would take my Pembroke for runs/walks (depending on their activity level), in the forest!
That being said, I am looking for a dog who is also down for snuggling on the couch and relaxing. |
