Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
both of us but mostly for Laura
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We had a rescue male for 9 years before he got a rescue chihuahua mix brother to play with! Auggie lived another 4 years. Morgan, his brother, passed on 2 years ago. Son moved in with his Australian Shepherd mix and moved out recently with his dog. We miss having an active dog to take fishing, camping and hiking with us. This is the first time we have been dogless in 15 years! I love the herding breeds for their intelligence, spiritedness, and energy. The sweet personality of Auggie was evident around all the kids in the neighborhood. But he was very protective of our house and strange grown ups had to watch themselves if we weren't around. The dog who would lick you to death if we weren't around wasn't the case with him. He was also returned 4 times to the animal shelter prior to our ownership as he was considered too hyper! We had no trouble training him to use the doggy door and had a lot of fun with Morgan even when he was a senior dog. I believe his brother kept his energy level up and enriched his life! It forced him to accelerate his activity level and they would play together. They enriched the lives of each other and us! Auggie was guarded but energetic and Morgan was passive but playful. They were a dynamic duo I miss so much! |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Telling our family member no and showing them what to do. We had an incident where Auggie got up on the kitchen table and found him there when we got home! We told him no and started pushing the chairs in to keep him from getting up on the table. He also would run away when we first got him. It was a chase game for him and the more we ran after him the more he enjoyed it. He would be returned home carried by a neighbor or I would quit chasing him and would get in the car to pick him up as he lounged in a neighbors yard. He would only run if we tried to catch him. If I picked him up in the car even if it was across the street, he would jump in the car next to me. He was a playful fellow and we recognized this instructing our neighbors not to chase him or retrieve him. He once ran away the day after Halloween to be recovered with a mouthful of dropped Halloween candy. The point being, each dog is different and each personality must be respected. He was getting used to us and we were getting used to him.
Discipline: |
Positive reinforcement for when they do something that pleases us. We also believe our dog is a member of the family with special needs. Auggie needed to feel confident we weren't going to take him back to the animal shelter. We had him a month before we installed the doggie door and trained him to use it. There was enticing food trail getting him to use it.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
We are morning walkers so are used to the lick to death take me for a walk morning ritual. After the walk our family member is fed and given attention. We are used to tiny eyes eyeing our breakfast preps as if we starve them to death. We know Corgis can tend to put on weight if we succcumb to the give me a sample look. Sister in-law works for Royal Canin so would get them the Corgi food. We also don't believe in dog junk food like snasages, or milk bones. We get our dogs to keep their teeth clean in bones and leather chews. We also regularly brush our dogs teeth. We had both dogs until they were 14 and 16 years respectively.

People at home during the day? |
I am home all day, so our dogs usually get 2 or more walks a day and can use to doggy door to our large fenced yard. I watched a dog agility training and thought the dog and I could do this together. I don't like the gym do the dog is my gym. I did 5K and 10K's with both dogs!
Where would dog eat? |
We have a mud room where the animal food bowls are placed. We train our dogs to not beg at the kitchen table while the humans eat, so they are given chew toys while the humans eat. This has worked for both dogs. Several people commented on the fact that we didn't have pulpy eyed beggars while we ate!
Where would dog sleep: |
We sleep in the same room as our dogs, but provide them with a separate comfy dog bed that can be carted to the living room or wherever we are so they can have their own place to nap throughout the day.
Play & exercise: |
Corgis are high energy individuals. They are not happy unless they get lots of attention by playing fetch, possibly agility training, dog park outings, attending parties in the neighborhood fire pits and camping, fishing, hiking, and training for races with mom!
How will you exercise your dog? |

Description of yard: |
We have a large grass plastic fenced yard. It has a cement patio and minimally landscaped. Both dogs we owned enjoyed joining us outdoors to do yard work even in the unfenced front yard. We train them to stay in the yard with us and not to run up to stranger dogs walking with their humans in the neighborhood. Both dogs couldn't resist begging attention and petting from the neighborhood kids.
