| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
The whole family. I have a wife and two grown children who are working their first jobs out of college and ares still at home. Our last Pembroke Welsh Corgi recently died a few months ago and we looking to fill the gap in our life that our beloved Stevie left. So it is really for all of us. My wife, kids, and I.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Our first and only dog before this was a Pembroke Welsh Corgi who we utterly loved and adored. Her name was Stevie and she was two or three years old. After the kids and I avidly researched the Corgi and decided we like the Pembroke over the Cardigan we had to set about looking for one to adopt. We loved their playful little ears that always stood up, the fact that they always looked like they were smiling, and that that legend charmingly stated that they were steeds for fairies. Everything about the little breed seemed to resonate with my little family. Once we decided that it was Pembroke or bust we set out to find a Corgi of our own to adopt. We adopted our first Pembroke Welsh Corgi through a woman named Pati Weidel at the Lakeshore Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club 2006. We found Pati Weidel through research on the Web for rescued Corgis and her name popped up and a few phone calls later we were set. So when our Stevie died a few months ago we tried contacting her for another little bundle of love and companionship. Though disappointingly she was no longer breeding and referred us to this site. Our only experience has been with our Stevie who was three when we got her and lived to be 15. She was wonderful and well trained. She had few problems and she never caused any disturbances in the house. We really did appreciate her presence as she quickly went from being the dog to being the fifth family member. We all recently discussed stories at dinner the other night of how she had comforted each of us through something difficult. The way that she would look at us sometimes made us comment that she must be a human trapped in that little corgi body. Either way they seem to be an energetic breed that is quite intelligent and adapts seamlessly into its surroundings. Lastly but most interestingly about the breed is that they seem to not be able to shake the need to herd. We would get home from Church and let her out to go to the bathroom and she would run tighter and tighter concentric circles around us and then run into one of our ankle, look up at us seemingly quite pleased with herself. It is one of our fondest memories. So we are quite eager to have another corgi.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Pretty much everything. Our last dog came with us everywhere including vacation with the exception of our one foray overseas. Walks, the kids sporting events, town parades, BBQ's, parties. The whole town loved her and anywhere we took her everyone had to pet her and know what the breed was and how it behaved. We felt like little Pembroke Welsh Corgi ambassadors proudly claiming "The queen only keeps these you know?" It was really fun. So I guess long story short she was always with us so the new dog would be as well.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We would just harshly say no and the dog would react accordingly. It never really took too much effort. Our tone of voice and disappointed features quickly reinforced correct behavior in our last dog. I see no reason why it would not work with our next one. We never had to nor would dream of using physical violence on our dog. Negative reinforcement does not work and should not be implemented.
Discipline: |
Much akin to my top answer. A harsh no coupled with disappointed facial expression was enough. Dogs are quite intelligent and can read through your expressions that what was done was wrong. I do not feel it takes more than that. The dog learns quickly.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Always with us but I would say the house or the backyard. Both are plenty spacious for the dog. We have a fence that encloses the yard so she can be out there alone. But our last dog spent most of its time inside the house with us. I imagine this next one would as well.
