| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
I am looking to adopt a Pembroke Corgi for myself, so that I may have a constant companion while working on my doctorate.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I really like Corgis' intelligence, athleticism, sense of humor, and how they look. In many ways, they behave like a large breed dog, which I favor due to growing up with them. I will not have the space to raise a large breed dog, however, which makes a Corgi a great potential choice. I've had friends and neighbors who owned Corgis, which is my experience with the breed. I've been doing research on the breed for several months through the internet, books, and talking to breeders.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I would like to play a lot of games with the Pembroke (fetch, tug of war, wrestling). I also would like a Pembroke that is very trainable so I can teach it new tricks and make sure it is fully obedient. I'd also like to have a Pembroke that likes going on walks, hikes, and swims if possible.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Ideally, if I caught the Pembroke in the act, I would approach it calmly and firmly say "No." while making eye contact. This, combined with a disappointed look, worked well with the dogs I grew up with as a child, assuming they were trained enough to be able to distinguish "No". If the dog was relieving itself in-doors, I would immediately take it outside to finish its business, but I believe catching the dog in the act and making it clear I do not approve would be appropriate.
Discipline: |
Firm voice, expressing disapproval. Depending on what happened, some isolation for the dog by putting it in the cage is also likely. I've also used squirt bottles filled with water as a method of discipline in the past, but isolation and "No" always seemed to be more effective for discipline.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Pembroke would spend most of his time in-doors. If very young, most of his time would be in his cage (or small fenced enclosure) in my bedroom when I am not actively watching/playing with him. When he gets older and is well house-broken, I would allow him to wander the apartment whenever I am home, or put in him my bedroom when I am away from home.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
No, there are not people home during the day at my house. However, I live very close to where I work and study, so I would not be leaving the Pembroke Corgi on his own for very long stretches of time, as I can easily come home in a few minutes to let him out.
Where would dog eat? |
I would feed the adopted corgi in the kitchen of my apartment.
Where would dog sleep: |
If young, the adopted corgi would sleep in a cage in my bedroom. If older or once house-broken, he would sleep in my bedroom either on the bed or on a dog bed, with the ability to move about the room freely.
Play & exercise: |
I plan on walking the adopted corgi each morning before leaving for work, likely several miles if he could handle it. When I get home from work I imagine I would spend at least 45 minutes making sure he got ample opportunity to play around and exercise. I think the amount of time for play and distance of the walks depends on the specific dog, however, so I'd likely have to adjust accordingly. I plan on making sure the Corgi gets ample time for exercise and play every day, however. Tired dogs sleep through the night well.
How will you exercise your dog? |
