Who is this dog for?

This corgi would be for me. My 24 year old daughter lives with me now, but may well be gone in the next year.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Corgis have been on my radar for many years and I have researched them both on line and with Corgi owners. During my time with them, I learned of their keen intelligence, their high interactive behavior and energy. When my dog Woody died, I was looking into a puppy or rescue, but when Layla needed rescuing from a friend, I took her in as our new second dog with great results. Now that Cleo has died, I would like to return to my Corgi quest.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I would leash walk the dog every day and allow plenty of time in my fenced back yard. Now that I am retired, I would also explore the possibility of agility training with him/her, as I am aware of the Corgi's intelligence and activity needs.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If by mistake, you mean eliminate in the house, I would immediately take him/her outside. I'd also make a point of praising whenever the dog eliminated outdoors and/or signaled that he wanted to go out. If you mean destructive behavior, I'd say a firm "no" and take away the object.

Discipline:
Positive reinforcement

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most of time in the house, which is a split level. A good portion of the time in the fenced back yard. Frequent trips to the many dog parks of Madison, one of which is only two blocks away from my house.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes. I am here most of the day, as is my daughter.

Where would dog eat?
Probably in my study, with door closed. I feed Layla in the bathroom, with closed door. I've always had two dogs, and I find separating them at feeding time is the wisest course of action

Where would dog sleep:
I have several dog beds in different rooms in my house. Layla sleeps either in my room in a bed (sometimes at foot of bed) or in living room on sofa pillow. We'd see where the Corgi would be best situated. I may consider a crate as well, depending on the dog. I trained both Woody and Cleo (both rescue dogs) to crates, and they often happily stayed in them when I left the house.

Play & exercise:
Layla is a very playful dog who enjoys "chase" games with other dogs in the yard, dog parks and in the house. He/she will have daily opportunities for both play and exercise. As mentioned above, I will also consider agility training. I would love to play "fetch" and frisbee with my Corgi; Layla is indifferent to these games.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
