Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Myself (Samantha) and my boyfriend (Patrick).
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I absolutely adore this breed for their spirit and energy. I find their spunky nature to be irresistable and endearing, and such a good match for my own personality. I think they are beautiful dogs with so much life in them. I have been lucky enough to work with dogs for the past 2 years at a boarding/training facility, and we see a lot of corgis at our facility. I have had so many good experiences with how playful and affectionate the corgis are. I have researched the breed on my own a bit, and am aware of the need to provide them with plenty of activity, as they are herding dogs by nature. I am also aware that it is important for corgi owners to be aware of their herding instincts and how these behaviors may come into play with people, other animals, etc.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
My boyfriend and I are both active people and enjoy being outside. We have several state parks/conservation areas we love to go walking through, all of which are dog friendly, and we would definitely bring our Pembroke with us on those trips. We also enjoy the beach and hiking. My boyfriend loves Frisbee and has interest in training our future dog to catch one. We are lucky enough to live in a neighborhood with a dog park, walking trails, and lots of open green space where we could safely play and explore with our dog.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We would gently correct our dog and try to continually positively reinforce desired behaviors. We understand that dogs learn by repetition and conditioning, so it is just as important to teach a dog what is right as to correct it when it does something "wrong".
Discipline: |
We say "no" and use redirection, i.e. removing a dog from a situation in which they are acting out or unsafe, replacing an undesired behavior with a desired response such as offering a toy if they are being disruptive, etc. Though we do crate train, we do not believe in using a crate as punishment. We also do not believe in spraying a dog with water, scaring it with loud noises, etc.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our Pembroke would have free reign of our home when we are present to supervise. We would be crate training our dog so that it can be safe when we are not home, but it would not spend time in the crate as long as we are home. We would have a place for our dog to sleep (their own bed, or in our bed).
