Who is this dog for?

Me. Michel. Corgis are the only breed I have had. Even growing up we had one. We have thought about getting a different kind but I know I won't be happy unless it is a corgi. I would like an adult or senior dog as once again that is what I have always gotten. My friends tell me I saw a corgi and thought of you.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I want to adopt a corgi because they are the only breed of dog I have ever had and if I got another kind I would still wish I had a corgi. I have grown up with them and have owed 3 in my 60 years. All have been pure breeds except Ernie who was a corgi/pug mix. All were adult dogs when we got them. I like the way they always look like they are smiling. Our last corgi, Bob would lay his head on my knee and look up at me. Let's face. it they are just so darned cute.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We would go on walks. In addition to a fenced yard, we live across the street from a park so this dog would get lots of exercise. We would go on car rides. In the past we took Bob with us to visit my dad in KS. We would play catch. Bob loved to fetch. If I was sitting on the deck, he would bring me the ball and nudge me as if to say "Come on let's play." I enjoy brushing my dogs. And honestly they need a lot of brushing.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If he is jumping on me, I point my finger at him and say no. I would gently put his paws on the floor. If he wet on the floor, I know it is because I didn't listen when he told me to let him out. Once he growled at my grandson, but as it turned out my grandson trying to ride him. I couldn't really fault the dog.

Discipline:
As with my kids, I found that a time out works to break the cycle and distract him from what he should not be doing. If he is bad, I say no and put him in a room by himself for a few minutes. I give him a treat when he obeys. (he comes when I call.)

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
If we are gone all day I would put him outside. It is a large yard so he has plenty of room.Usually, we leave our corgi inside because my husband can let him out at various times during the day to go to the bathroom.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
My husband is retired, but he does not spend the whole day at home. There will be times when the corgi will be alone in the house.

Where would dog eat?
I know corgis can have a tendency to gain weight and that can cause back problems. They are big eaters if you let them. Depending on the age of the corgi, I would get food appropriate for them.

Where would dog sleep:
In the past, our corgis have slept in the same room as us. One of our corgis, Jack liked to sleep under the bed with just his nose sticking out. I have found corgis like to be where the people are.

Play & exercise:
Since I need to walk everyday, this dog will too. Our last corgi could walk for miles. It was amazing for such short legs, they are fast. We will play fetch

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
The fence is chained link around the back to the garage but solid 6 ft. wood around the side. The yard has several trees for shade. It is open field behind our house an no houses on either side. We live in town but are surrounded by the park.

Household members:

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Michel but we both care for the dog

Willing to train children?
Yes, although our kids are grown and out of the house any children we have visiting would be shown how to treat the corgi and what he likes-petting, brushing, playing catch. I would make sure they did not bother the corgi while he is eating.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
yes, Max, our cat, thinks he is a watch dog. He is a 3rd shifter. He sleeps all day and stays out all night. You can see him walking the perimeter or sitting by the driveway keeping us safe. When we had Bob the corgi, Max ignored him. The cat had no interest in being friends. In the same way, if we have company, Max just disappears.
We won't have anymore than 2 pets.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
