| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
This would be for the both of us.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We've both always loved Corgis, they are such an adorable breed. We've done a lot of research on the breed and feel like they're a perfect fit for us and our lives. First and foremost, they're small in size, but big in personality. We're recent-graduates who will be apartment living for a couple years until we can afford a home/condo. The smaller size of a Corgi would be a better fit for that environment.
We're young and don't have any kids, some of the heel-nipping/herding instincts corgis have would be mitigated in our environment. We've also read/heard they can be energetic, we love to get outdoors and explore. Our family has a second home in Wisconsin which we visit every other weekend for camping/hiking etc. We think their intelligence, big personality, cute size and notability as a family dog make them a good match for us as dog parents. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Outside of daily walks, we plan daily play with the corgi in our home as well. As mentioned above, we love the outdoors and hiking. Being in Chicago there's lots of great opportunities to go out, like walks on the beach, the various trails around the city and burbs. We also have a second family home we can visit on weekends for some real outdoor action.
In our off-time we like to hang around the house and watch movies/shows, play video games. We're hopeful our pup would relax with us in the off-time as well. We're both fortunate to work from home several days a week, which means we'll be around during work as well. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We believe in non-violent discipline for our pets. Much of my family have dogs and have success with non-violent discipline. We would employ things like negative tone/language if he/she makes a mistake. We could do things like taking away toys, or limiting favorite activities. The trick is connecting a negative consequence with negative behavior, without doing something that would harm the dog and your relationship with it.
Discipline: |
As stated above, non-violent discipline. My aunt keeps track of her dog's favorite things/activities and takes those away in moderation if her dog misbehaves. At the time of the negative behavior, using a negative tone/negative language to signal the mistake to the dog. Not showing attention to the dog when they make a mistake to reinforce that behavior as negative.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Likely indoors with us, we do not have a backyard in our current apartment. We're pretty open to letting the dog around our apartment, we currently have a pretty spacious 2-bedroom. We will likely avoid crating the dog unless necessary.

People at home during the day? |
We are both fortunate to work from home several days a week. I personally can work from home whenever I like, typically this is 3-4 days a week. Melisa works from home 2 days a week currently, Tuesdays and Fridays. Around holidays/slow periods at work, we sometimes work completely remotely. We are both home all weekend.
Where would dog eat? |
The corgi would eat with us in our home, we'd likely set up a place in the kitchen or dining room where they can have their food/water.
Where would dog sleep: |
We will get a bed for our corgi, and likely set it up at the foot of our bed nearby. If they wanted to snuggle up with us at night, I don't think either of us would complain.
Play & exercise: |
We plan on keeping the apartment well-stocked with doggie toys. In off-hours we can definitely play with the dog around the house. Outside of this, there's a park down the street from our apartment. We also both drive and there are plenty of places around the city we can take our dog for some outside fun.
We would aim to take our dog out multiple times a day for exercise and certainly play around the house outside of that. |
