| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
A family of 3. We have a son who is currently 6 and feel that a corgi would be a great fit for our family. A corgi aside from adorable looks fits the mold of being a "not too big nor too small" with a playful attitude that is family and older kid friendly. We have a fenced in back yard for him/her to run play in and live at the end of a cul-de-sac in a suburban dog friendly neighborhood that is great for walks. We would prefer a younger dog as the idea would be to grow up with our son.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
As I said before, a corgi aside from adorable looks fits the mold of being a "not too big nor too small" with a playful attitude that is family and older kid friendly. It is our favorite breed of dog. We are very affectionate and attentitive to pets in our family (we have one cat currently that endures this already) Due to its playful and curious attitudes but also the breeds occasional clumsiness or quirkiness fits in well with our family. I (Michael) have a few friends that have owned corgis that I have been fortunate enough to spend time with and has only increased my desire to raise one of my own.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
While not a super active family we enjoy walks at parks and in our neighborhood. Our son is an active baseball and soccer player who would love a partner to practice with. I would also consider trying to teach the corgi to swim in our gated access pool. We have an open floor layout home where a dog might be able to run fairly freely to play inside as well. We have no real steps to speak of (great for short legs)

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
If caught in middle of the act, firmly tell them NO and redirect their behavior. If mistake is found well after the act then try to approach the problem logically for a solution (EG if a shoe or childs toy is chewed or damaged it probably means that they either need more chew toys themselves or that the toys/shoes shouldn't be made so accessible to the dog.) It is just as much my fault as much as it is the dogs for failing to prevent the mistake from happening in many cases.
Discipline: |
Verbal reprimands and commands such as "NO" "Stop" "stay" "down". Rewarding positive behavior is also a goal.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In and around our home and small neighborhood.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Being a teacher my wife gets off early in the day (3pm) However there would be no one at the house between 8am and 3pm.
Where would dog eat? |
Out of a corgi sized food and water dish to be located in a corner of our dining room.
Where would dog sleep: |
While we would welcome the corgi to sleeping on any bed of its choosing. It will have a doggy bed available to it in our Guest room which is also were a crate would be kept to be used only in rare occasions.
Play & exercise: |
We have an active 6 year old who loves to play, bike and run in our back yard and neighborhood. During the summer I expect the corgi to get several hours of outdoor playtime a day. During the winter months I would expect the corgi to receive at least one walk a day and a backyard run with weather permitting. There will be plenty of indoor running/playing to make up for weather.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
|

As we only have 1 cat currently that is seemingly friendly toward other pets we hope this will suffice but the cat has the ability to avoid the dog if it chooses/wishes.
