Other preferences:
The dog will need to O.K. with cats and very friendly to all. Barking, freaking out when new people come in the house will not be a good fit. A red and white would be our preferred but the black headed tri are pretty darn cute too! We are looking more for outstanding personality than looks.

Who is this dog for?

This is for our family. We love animals and our kids are getting older so can participate in the care of the puppy/dog. We do have a very active household, with lots of kids in and out, 4 cats, 1 snake and 1 chinchilla. Our cats are very well loved and the dog would need to get along famously with them. So we are thinking a puppy/young dog would be best so it can grow up with the cats. My girls have loved Corgi's forever and this is their preferred breed. But we would prefer to rescue one that needs a loving home than to buy from a breeder. All our cats are rescues and would like to continue with that tradition if possible. We are looking anytime after April 1, 2019 so that the kids will be home more in the summer to play/walk/get the puppy acclimated to our home. So I am being proactive, hoping to find the perfect pup for our family! Thanks much- Amy

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My children have done extensive research on the breed. They are said to be friendly and energetic but not require a huge space to run. They are said to be smart and easily trainable. Their size is appropriate for us as we are not looking for a lab or golden, but a medium size dog. We have seen several Corgi's around town and they are always friendly and overall great dogs. Their butts are cute too!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We have a large back yard, very conducive to fetch and playing. I would like to walk the dog to get me out of the house more. But we are heading into winter so short legs might make it hard from him/her to get around in the snow! Would take that into consideration. Madison, WI is FULL of dog parks and several of my co-workers go twice weekly. If the dog enjoyed that, we would certainly go as much as possible.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We would take the dog to obedience classes ASAP to better learn how to coach/teach the dog in positive ways. But as with children, be consistent, don't use physical force, say No and then redirect with an acceptable behavior.

Discipline:
As above. Can use timeouts in crate, reward system for positive behavior.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Depending on how the pup is with his/her crate and chewing things in our house… eventually, would like to be able to let the puppy stay out in the house during the day to cuddle with the cats, etc. But at first, likely crate during those ~ 6 hours during the day to see how he/she does. Then out the rest of time with the family. Night is to be determined… the kids want the dog to sleep with them which is fine with us but again, need to determine if chewing my best shoes are on this dog's agenda.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
During the summer months, yes.. I have 3 children and they would be home. The youngest is 10 so they are old enough to care for the dog but will still be around for quite some time before college. During the school year, I work 4 days a week and my husband works 5. I would be off Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday with the dog. The other days, I leave at 8am and then my husband is home by 3:30 (as are the kids). So the dog would be home alone, with the 4 cats for that time frame.

Where would dog eat?
In the kitchen. Would need to see how that went with the cats. Separate feeding times at first.

Where would dog sleep:
In bed with the kids if it works. If not, in a bed in our room. If that doesn't work, in a crate in our room.

Play & exercise:
Daily. Our cats are loved beyond belief. And spoiled. The dog would have the same. Playing tug, playing fetch, running outside, dog parks at least weekly, perhaps more.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
