| Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions | |||||||
|
Who is this dog for? |
For my husband and me. We have been owned by Bernese Mountain Dogs for the past 25 years and our current dog is in her final stage of osteosarcoma. As older dog owners, we don't feel we are strong enough to handle a strong muscular dog like a berner again. My interest in corgis was piqued because of the AKC description of a corgi as a big dog in a small dog's body. I love to walk and miss my daily walks with my best buddy, Etta.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I am most fond of large breed dogs and that is the type of dog we have had the most of. When our current Bernese was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 5, I miss her companionship on my daily walks. She is a huge inspiration to get up and move. I read about many breed characteristics on the AKC website and was drawn to the describtion of a corgi as a large dog in a small dog's body. I wan a dog that can be my companion for walks and outdoor activities. We live in Northern Michigan and I stay active all year round. I read that corgis do well in cold snowy climates, which describes where we live to a T.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
Walks, visits to the lake, I am also interested in investigating agility which my berner had no interest in .

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I have had best results with positive training and redirection.
Discipline: |
Until the dog is comfortable with our home, I like to keep the dog tethered to me on a 6 ft leash. That way, I can minimize correction for bad behavior but concentrate on positive reinforcement. My husband is a retired behavior psychologist with 30 + years in behavior modification techniques.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With us. | ||||||

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes | ||||||
Where would dog eat? |
We have always designated eating areas away from the dinner table for our dogs. Outside of training, all treats are given at their eating area to minimize begging during our meal times.
Where would dog sleep: |
In a crate in our bedroom initially. After training is complete and we are confident in the dogs behavior, the crate door is opened and the dog can sleep in a dog bed.
Play & exercise: |
