Who is this dog for?

The family

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have dog-sat our friend's corgi to the point where it was part of our family, too. We were so trusted that when it came time for Chili to pass she was left to us since they had to take their daughter to college. We had a great 10 years with Chili where we were her primary alternate caregivers/family. In addition, other friends have had corgis whom we have also cared for on multiple occasions. We are very familiar with the breed and especially love their independent nature and attentive personality

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Play in our backyard; long walks in both the neighborhood and on a nearby college campus. Also she would part of our family gatherings and our dogs have always been a family/extended family member

Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Since we have raised two dogs from puppies we have a consistent method of discipline. It all revolves around being very, very verbal with the dog; without a doubt we believe that constantly talking to a dog is how the dog is able to understand our inflections, our facial expressions and our "intent".

Discipline:
We do not use any sort of corporal punishment with our dogs. The most that we will do is raise our voice so that they understand the difference in tonality.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our home. We do not and have not use crate training for our dogs. Our dogs are always with us be it on the couch or in the office. And, of course, our dogs have always slept with us.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, for the most part. I work out of the house but travel occasionally for work. My wife works part time for 6 hours on Mon/Wed/Fri. Our daughter has just returned home after graduating from college and will be at home for the near future.

Where would dog eat?
We place our dog's bowls in our kitchen

Where would dog sleep:
As stated above, our dogs share our beds. More importantly, when our dogs have stayed with family members, they, too, welcome them into their beds, too.

Play & exercise:
We take our dogs for multiple walks around the block (approx 4) along with an extended evening or afternoon walk depending on the day and weather. We also have our dog accompany us on short car rides like to Starbucks. That said, we have and would NEVER leave a dog alone in a sealed car during the summer or even moderately warm days. If we run an errand where we would need to gone for several minutes (i.e. grocery shopping) then our dog remains at home

How will you exercise your dog?
On leash

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
We have a large backyard that is fenced on three sides but we have a long open driveway. As such, we never leave our dog unattended in our backyard. We do let her run free on the lawn and play unrestrained. We have always trained our dogs NOT to leave the backyard without us

Our last dog, Emma, a pure-bred Sheltie was raised from a puppy and was the first of our "children." She was 3.5 years old when our first child was born and about 6 when our daughter was born. Both children were raised with Emma until her death at age 13. Emma was always protective of our children and instinctively understood who they were. At the same time, our children learned and deeply loved their dog and were devastated at her passing.
