Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
This dog would be for my 17 year old son, Zach. My husband Pat and I are both supportive of his adopting a Corgi and we have had three dogs in the past that we raised from puppies and had as members of our family until they passed. We haven't had a dog for the past 12 years, but feel we are ready to add another canine member to our family.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We really like the breed. I had a neighbor who had one and it was a really nice dog. My nephew has one as well. We have had collies in the past and the corgi temperament seems similar to the collies. My son and husband are also very active (both are runners) and we think that a corgi would be a great companion for them. We are looking for a smaller dog, so thought a corgi would be a good fit.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We live on 10 acres, with a small fenced yard and then we have an invisible fence system that encloses about 3 acres beyond the fence. So our corgi could be out on the property with all of us doing our various activities. And as I said, my husband and son are runners and would take the corgi with. The corgi would also be a part of our family in our regular activities in our large house.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
We wouldn't punish the dog, but would try to correct the behavior as it is happening. We know it takes patience and lots of positive reinforcement to train a dog.
Discipline: |
Try to distract it, tell it "no", remove it from the area, reward good behavior. Try not to give it a command that you can't make it comply with (like telling it to "come" when it isn't on a leash, until it is well trained).
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
My husband and I do both work, but I only work 4 days a week. Our son is in high school currently, and he plans to attend a local vo-tech after high school, so he will be still living at home after he graduates. So initially when we aren't home, he will probably be crated or at least confined to the kitchen (depending on how he behaves). Once we know he can be trusted, he will be loose in the house. When we are home, he will be with us. Depending on how he likes being outside, we could leave him in the fenced or invisible fence controlled areas.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Three days a week there are. My husband does stop at home during the day (he is self-employed and doesn't work far away). My son will be home during the summer and he usually gets home from school early. I am off on Mondays and am hoping to be able to cut back even more next year.
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen. | ||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
We are thinking in my son's room, on his own dog bed (or in a kennel, if he isn't ready to be left out all night).
Play & exercise: |
My husband and son both run daily in the evening. And my son loves dogs and we would all play with him when we are home. A minimum of one hour exercise a day. And lots of playing.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

We have a six foot chain link fence in our back yard. And we also have an invisible fence system outside of the chain link fence, that surrounds about 3 acres.

Description of yard: |
We live on 10 acres and we have a large yard. We do have a swimming pool, but would only allow the dog in that area with supervision, if that will be an issue. It was never an issue with our dogs in the past. Our collies hated the water and stayed away from the pool.
