I (Maureen) have my own home w/4 older cats and like corgis because they generally get along w/cats. NO aggressive animals or w/"issues" (eg, separation anxiety). The corgi will likely be an only dog. I am big on animal rescue; I have rescued many cats. Mike is an experienced dog owner but the girl he put down today was his favorite; he'd had dachshunds before.

Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
This corgi is primarily for Mike; I (Maureen) live w/Mike much of the time. Mike had to put his corgi down today and will be ready to adopt another in a couple months. It is impt for him to walk for exercise & he'd been walking his corgi for 10 yrs; he knows it will feel weird come spring not to have a dog beside him. Mike has a recreational property on 7 acres; I have 2/3 acre on the edge of town. There trails by our homes. This will be a well-cared for and loved dog. I believe in rescue adoptions.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Mike loves Pembroke Welsh Corgis. I do, too. He loves how they look and move; he loves the "tractor pull" of their walk. We both appreciate how they can't get up on counters. They are generally gentle and non-aggressive, even if a bit "mouthy". I recently got back from the hosp and the corgi watched over me as part of her "herd", day and night.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We like to go for walks, in the town and on hiking trails. I think it's a shame so many people leave dogs penned up in their yards. The corgi would go to camp (the recreational property) w/Mike and there is a life jacket so she can go boating if she wants. Under no circumstances would this dog be tied up, tied out or left alone for long periods, although it could stay home or accompany Mike to a job site when he's working & I'm at my place w/my cats doing studio work.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
With gentle discipline. You always use positive reinforcement of the good action you want to reinforce, you never punish and certainly never hit any animal! Corgis are very intelligent and Mike said it only took one afternoon to house train his corgi. She was a "rescue" of sorts from a breeder; she'd been returned because her ears didn't stand up and was terrified of bicycles and traffic. It seems her former owner had run her alongside while taking daily bike rides in traffic. Can you imagine?
Discipline: |
You tell a dog "NO" very clearly when the action is not good; you don't tolerate showing of teeth or any behaviors that tend toward being aggressive. Mike only had to be quite firm like that a couple times w/his corgi over the full 10 yrs.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Our corgi spent a lot of time at home w/us but would also accompany Mike on rides to lock jobs across the area; he would walk her as soon as the job ended, in parks, on streets, along Lake Superior, etc. She accompanied Mike to camp and would stay there as long as he did, but she actually preferred to be home. When she was young and Mike ran a bldg supply store, she came to work every day and greeted customers. She loved to come to my place and walk the nearby wooded trails on her leash.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Mike is only on the job ~15 hrs/wk. He is 66 and will be fully retired sometime in the next 10 yrs.
Where would dog eat? |
She ate her dry food in the small hallway betw the family rm and downstairs BA. She also ate treats in the kitchen and family room; she liked to travel around w/her treats and eat them in bits and pieces over time.
Where would dog sleep: |
The corgi slept in the BA. She preferred to sleep on a nest of clothes in a corner and sometimes on the blanket of her original crate; the crate was used as a resting spot she could return to when she wanted to get away from the activity of the store when she was young and worked as a "greeter".
Play & exercise: |
Every day she would be run w/a laser in Mike's yard and taken for walks on a leash, weather permitting, unless she is at camp and taken for hikes there, also on a leash.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
Mike's fence is chain-link. There are two gates, one to the garage and on to the front yard. They were kept closed at all times unless in active use; the corgi was never allowed to wander into traffic or harm's way.

Yes. Note that these cats are old and may not even be alive by the time I consider moving in to Mike's house; if he moves into mine, there are ways we can separate the floors easily so that the cats have the upstairs to themselves and our BR will be downstairs.
Lifetime commitment to Pembroke? |
Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.
