Who is this dog for?

Our family

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have always loved corgis. I grew up riding horses and the stable where I boarded had three corgis. They were always either in the barn or "helping" us school our horses! They were full of personality and courage.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We are an active family of five with two adults and three teen daughters. We like to take walks and play in the backyard. We visit neighbors with dogs and my mother lives across the street with her Border Terrier. So we would look for a dog that enjoys the company of humans and canines.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Calmly redirect – in the case of a bathroom mistake, put the Pembroke outside immediately and clean up the mess. I do not believe in punishing a dog for a mistake in the house – but I do believe in getting rid of the evidence right away! I would also adjust my habits – careful monitoring of water consumption and regular and consistent trips to the backyard.

Discipline:
I am a believer in crate training – not for discipline but for security for the dog. So a new dog would not be left to roam the house until I had observed and determined their level of house training, etc. We do not yell at our dogs or hit our dogs. As I said above, redirection is key to my work with all our other pets (and teenagers). I also believe in positive reinforcement. And am aware of negative reinforcement. For example, our beagle was very vocal. We did not yell at her to be quiet. Instead, we moved the couch so she could no longer see all the other dogs out on their walks.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the beginning, a crate when we were not in the house. My husband is a teacher and is able to come home at lunch. I work a flexible schedule so am also available during the day. Family is usually home by 3:30 pm and there is always summer break. Our dogs, otherwise, are loose in the house.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Again, with flexible schedules, the ability to be home is open to us. As well, my mother lives across the street and is home all day and always available to pop over for a walk or bathroom break.

Where would dog eat?
I have been a fan of the Nutro brand of dog food, especially the essentials dry food. We are not table/scrap feeders.

Where would dog sleep:
All our other dogs have slept in their own bed in our (parents) bedroom.

Play & exercise:
I am an early morning walker, so this would be a great opportunity to have a companion. We like to throw the ball and set up obstacle courses in the backyard. Although we live in town, state and county parks are just minutes away and we enjoy time spent there. Evening walks are also important. Three active teenagers means many people will be involved in the care of our dog.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
