Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
We are looking to add a herding dog to our family and small hobby farm. We have two rescue dogs that we have had for many years and would prefer to rescue/adopt over purchasing a dog. It is for our family.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have a small hobby farm with sheep, chickens, ducks, and horses. We are expanding our sheep flock. We also have a 1y/o son. We are looking to add a herding dog to our family and farm. I have done a huge amount of research on different herding breeds and Corgis (both Pembroke and Cardigan) have begun to top our list. They combine the farm-work ability with having the ability to be good family dogs. Our other two dogs are smaller and mostly prefer dogs that are closer to their size than much bigger. I have friends with corgis and enjoy their outgoing, lively personalities. Beyond that, I have more experience with Australian Cattle Dogs than corgis.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We are an active family. We enjoy walks and hikes, I went hiking with my son in a pack on my back (with my parents) and our dogs for over 4mi this morning! We also want to do herding and farm work. If needed, we will pursue formal herding training, there are at least 2 herding trainers in our area.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Remind it of the appropriate choice. Most dog mistakes are a training error or communication error on the part of the human. I would review what I was missing in my communication and start over.
Discipline: |
On occasion we scold our dogs. Again, we find that situations that need discipline are human errors or dog dysregulation. We find calm time and then try again.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
With us on the farm. Our farm is completely fenced and we are moving around a lot. Or in the house/yard with us.
