Other preferences:
We currently have 2 adult male cats in the home — any new animal must be able to get along with cats. I understand that corgis are natural herders and I'm sure there will be some tendencies to move our cats into groups, but we cannot tolerate any aggressive or overly dominant traits. We are happy to provide the exercise and stimulation these dogs need in an effort to keep them happily occupied and less distracted with the cats. We will also ensure proper introductions are made between the animals.

Since my husband and I are also planning to start a family soon, we would also need a dog that is good with small children (again, not overly dominant or aggressive). We would make every effort on our part to properly and safely socialize our dog with any new family members.

We do not often have a lot of people at our house, but we do like to host family gatherings around the holidays or in the summertime, with about 10-15 people that do include small children (2 and under).

Finally, please note we do not currently have a fenced-in yard.

Who is this dog for?

Our corgi would be a family dog (we have no children but plan to within the next year) but would really be for me (Carrie) … I have loved Corgis since I was a child!

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We simply love the breed — they are the happiest looking dogs on the planet! With their smaller size and loyal temperament, we think one (or several) would make a great addition to our home. While we have never owned a corgi before, we have done research on the breed and have friends who own them.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We live in a very quiet, friendly neighborhood and quite frequently take walks, so we would of course introduce our corgi to the neighborhood! There is also a dog park about 10 minutes away from our house that we would take our corgi to. We would also love to enroll our dog in some agility/training classes to give him/her a mental as well as a physical workout.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We fully anticipate a few mistakes with a new dog– on their end and ours! We believe in firm patience, knowing that a dog is likely to make mistakes and forgiving them while correcting the behavior as soon as possible either through distraction (toys to prevent chewing for example) or through food motivation. We would invest in training for the dog not only for its overall well being but to guide us as new owners.

Discipline:
We have not previously owned dogs (as adults) so do not have established methods of discipline, but we would follow best practices of the trainer and other dog owners we know.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Our corgi would be in our house most of the time (when not out on a walk) and crated if we are away for more than a few hours (4). Depending on our work schedules, we may take advantage of doggy day care as well. We also have neighbors who can check on the dog if needed.

People at home during the day?
At the moment, yes — we are currently working remotely through most of September due to COVID-19. While we anticipate returning to the office in the fall, both of us have flexible schedules and can be home as needed.

Where would dog eat?
We have a few available places on the main floor of our house, either in the kitchen area or the laundry/mudroom. Our main concern would be to feed the dog and cats separately to establish safe feeding spaces for both animals until they fully get along. Currently, the cats eat in the basement.

Where would dog sleep:
Our corgi would be welcome to sleep anywhere really, but we would encourage him/her to sleep in their crate in the beginning, to help them get used to their new environment and provide a safe space. They are welcome to sleep with us, but it gets quite hot upstairs in the summer!

Play & exercise:
We understand that corgis need a good amount of exercise to keep from becoming destructive in the house, so we would take nice long walks (at least 45 minutes) both morning and evening. Walks would likely be split into shifts (Carrie walks in the morning, Ron walks in the evening) to account for our work schedules. If our dog needs to be left alone during the day, we would leave plenty of chew toys, food and water to help occupy them until we return.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes, we are committed to making a safe introduction for all animals. However, we understand that not all animals get along. Our cats have never been exposed to any dog before, so we do not know how they will react. If it is clear that the animals are stressed out for a long period of time, we would be obliged to surrender the dog.
