Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
This corgi will be for my fiance and I. We just bought our house this year, and we are in the process of having our yard fenced in. Now that we're getting settled in, we thought it would be the perfect time to find another addition to our small family. We currently have a 6 year old PWC who I've had since she was a puppy, so we are pretty familiar with the breed. I am looking to go through a rescue for our second dog, rather than a breeder, which led me here.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
While we are not exclusively looking to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the breed is on my short list of "preferred" breeds for our next dog. As I stated in a previous application question, we currently have a 6 year old PWC who is the light of my life, and it would be a dream come true to find an adoptable corgi to add to our family. I am familiar with the corgi temperament, as well as potential medical considerations that come along with the breed. I have found my current corgi to be very smart and easy to train , very food-motivated, surprisingly able to get into mischief (which has led to corgi-proofing some areas of the house that I never thought she would be able to reach, like the kitchen counters!), and simultaneously mellow and high-energy with random bouts of the "zoomies." I am also familiar with their grooming requirements and have become accustomed to finding dog hair on everything I own, no matter how often I brush (almost daily) and bathe (monthly or as needed) our corgi and vacuum our house. |
||||||
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We take our corgi on 3 walks a day in addition to quick potty breaks in the backyard. Once we finish fencing in our new backyard, they'll have nearly half an acre of room to run and play off-leash. We love taking our corgi on car rides and hiking in the state park near our house, and bringing her to our parents' houses to interact with other dogs in a safe environment. We have shied away from using our local dog park due to a lack of monitoring and influx of aggressive dogs, but we still try to keep our dog socialized and would do all the same with our future second dog. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I have found that a lot of the "mistakes" that my corgi has made over the years could have been avoided ahead of time, and I have learned to kind of preemptively remove the risk (leaving any kind of food in a potentially-accessible area, for example). Depending on the type of mistake, I will use one of the discipline methods discussed in the next question if I see fit. If the mistake requires medical attention, I have both our regular vet and the local emergency vet phone numbers saved in my phone.
Discipline: |
When I catch them in the behavior, usually a firm "No!" will do the trick in conjunction with redirection and rewarding when they do the correct behavior. I have removed my dog from situations in which she is acting out (barking at guests, begging for food, etc.) by sending her to her crate (which she loves and will willingly spend time in) until she calms down, then allowing her to be out with us again. If she is too excited about something, I avoid giving her attention until she settles down. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Almost 100% of the time, our current corgi has free reign over the house whether we are home or away, and she usually spends her time on the main level of our house. She is crate trained and will often to go her crate (in the living room) to just hang out, or if we have to secure her when somebody is over. We do allow her to sleep in our bedroom with us. We would intend on the same system with a new dog, tweaking it as we see fit while we go through the acclimation process to our house.

People at home during the day? |
We both work second shift, but schedules are offset a bit, so there is a period of about 6-7 hours, only 3 days a week, where nobody will be home. The rest of the time, at least one of us will be home. Our current system is for my fiance to take the dog(s) on a walk and feed them lunch right before he leaves for work, then for me to walk the dog(s) and feed them dinner when I get home from work so that there is a minimal amount of time where they are needing to go potty or eat. We've been using this system for nearly 4 years with our current corgi, and it hasn't given us any issue yet. I feel it is worth noting that we also have a Furbo dog camera that covers the majority of the main level of our house, so that we can check in and keep an eye on the dog(s) while we are away. It would be most ideal to be able to take a corgi home during the time frame of September 5-13, 2020 when we are both off work, so that we can really work on getting a new dog acclimated to our routine and house. |
||||||
Where would dog eat? |
We have a corner of our dining area set up for our current corgi's food/water station. We would initially set up for a second dog right next to this area, but if we find that there is any kind of food guarding/aggression/protection issue between the two dogs, we would move the new dog's food station to the opposite side of the room or into the new dog's crate as needed to prevent issue.
Where would dog sleep: |
At night, our adopted corgi would ideally sleep in our bed with us and our current corgi. We do also have a dog bed set up in our bedroom for our current corgi, one in the open in our living room, and one in her crate in the living room. 90% of the time our corgi will sleep in our bed, but occasionally she likes to use the dog bed in our bedroom. We like to give her the option for her own comfort. We would do the same for our future second dog.
Play & exercise: |
In addition to our 3 walks a day, I have dedicated play time with my corgi before and after I work each day, plus throughout the day on my days off. Once we finish fencing in our yard, our dog(s) will have nearly a half acre of lawn and wooded yard to play in. My current corgi is very well trained with recall, so I usually keep her off leash in our backyard now as long as I am actively able to pay attention to her while I'm out there. Until the yard is fully fenced, I would keep our second corgi on a leash in the back yard while we work on training.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
Our fence has not currently been installed yet since we just moved into this house earlier this year, but we are under contract with a fencing company to have the fence installed by the end of the year (weather permitting, by the end of September). Since our backyard is half lawn and half woods, our fence is divided into two zones – a 6 foot cedar privacy fence in the lawn half by our house, and a 4ft chainlink fence in the wooded half. The entire back yard will be fenced in, giving a large and secure play area for our dogs.

Our lot is just under a half acre. Half of the backyard (closest to the house) is a flat, grassed lawn. The back half of the backyard is a wooded area where we have a fire pit. We occasionally see deer and turkeys wander through the wooded portion of our lot, which will be diminished when our fence is finished. We do not have a swimming pool or any otherwise-dangerous elements to our yard.
