Me (Julie Ko) | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Before I have my current Pembroke Corgi, I was looking for a dog who can be independent, but also has a curious mind and go on adventures with me. A couple of online quizzes showed me Pembroke Corgi as a match. Now I realized they are much more than just that! I had been told that Pembroke Corgis are intelligent dogs, but I am still constantly amazed at the different ways mine would communicate with me. She's perceptive of situations, and I loved that she seems to understand our emotions. She's very affectionate but yet constantly guarding the house; she may be the loudest and smallest watchdog I've known, but her every effort is nevertheless heartwarming. Pembroke Corgis are naturally working dogs, so I'm always looking for new ways to challenge her, whether it's learning a new command or solving puzzles for treats. She seems to be finding herself some "official" jobs to do such as gathering all the socks in one pile or making sure no birds casually eat fruits from the backyard. The common impression of Corgis is that they love food and would overeat given the chances. But mine has turned out to be relatively picky and instead of overeat, she hides her leftovers under the couches or in her bed…I feel very lucky to have a cautious dog who doesn't just eat anything she finds and to have the self control to distinguish when she's full vs when food is just available!
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
On a daily basis, the dogs go on 30minutes to one hour walk. I usually would bring my dog to work, and she gets to socialize with other humans or have play dates with other dogs in the office. After dinner, my dog would potato with me on the couch. I would like to jog with my dog depending on the neighborhood. We go on hikes or walk on trails when we can. I took her to a Corgi Beach day once and found out she does not like the ocean, and I'm planning to do many other road trips with her to find out what does she like and not like.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Depending on the mistake, sometimes dogs can't control their impulse and that just can't be helped. Even though we don't speak the same language, I think finding a way that works to communicate with them has been very important in my experience. Letting them know that you disapprove of the action by making a face, changing my tone, or not giving them the affection they want, etc. They'll quickly learn what is considered a mistake to me.
Discipline: |
I believe in communication. Periodically letting them know when you appreciate them and that they are being good. But also letting them know if they did something you disapprove of. My parents were firm believers in positive reenforcement, and I think the same logic can be applied to dogs as well. They shouldn't be scared of being themselves in front of their family, but they should also be able to learn the rules to coexist under the same roof.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Home. As well as couple hours in the backyard a day especially before bed and first thing in the morning. They could come to work with me when our offices reopen in the future.

House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes | ||||||
Where would dog eat? |
In the kitchen, we reserve an area for dogs to eat and drink water
Where would dog sleep: |
Anywhere they want. If it's a puppy, I'd generally crate train them to sleep in the crate, but as they grow older, they can choose to not sleep in the crate when they don't want to.
Play & exercise: |
Playdates with friends with dogs (or cats! My Corgi has a cat best friend growing up!). Playdates with dogs in the office. I'm not certain if herding dogs play fetch, they seem to enjoy me trying to take the balls from them more, but I currently do that daily with my Corgi. Going on roughly half hour walks every day, occasionally going on hikes.
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

A wooden door that leads to the driveway. Shared fence with neighbors on both sides. They are wooden fences that don't have space for dogs to dig under. Well maintained, they sometimes get wet when we water plants, but there's no issues with my dog digging a hole under the fence or things like that.

Description of yard: |
The front yard is not fenced, and we don't usually let dogs roam around there without a leash. The backyard is in an L shape. A sliding door from the dining room leads to the backyard where one side of the yard separates off front and back yard while the other sides separates us from the neighbors. Around the fences are plants, various vegetables, and fruit trees. The rest of the backyard has concrete walkway with a big area of stones. We didn't particularly train dogs to go to bathroom on these stones, but our dog only goes on that area. At the end of the walkway, one door leads to the garage, and another wooden door leads to the driveway. These doors are typically closed.
