Who is this dog for?

Applicant #1 – Madeline Yzurdiaga

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have loved Pembroke Welsh Corgis since I was a child and grew up with one, who my family adopted when I was five years old and had until I turned 18 years old. My dog, Rambo, was my earliest and sometimes only best friend. I took him on walks and to the park every day for 13 years and is among my happiest childhood memories. I've been hoping to adopt a corgi since his passing. I love corgis because they are so outgoing, upbeat and energetic, and generally loving breed. You can spend time with them in the park for hours, take them on long walks, but still sit on the couch all day with them. I am a very active person, working out daily and going on long walks, so a corgi is a great dog that can be incorporated to all aspects of my life. I also love them because they are smaller in size so they can easily cuddle with you on the couch or in bed. I have done a lot of research on the breed and know that they can be prone to barking and biting on things if they don't get enough social activity. I plan to combat that minimum twice daily walks and lots of toys and activities throughout the day. My flexible schedule allows me to leave at a moment's notice for more activity.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I plan on going on long walks, playing at the park and the dog park, taking them out in the neighborhood to socialize with other dogs and people, and go for jogs (if the dog is able to and wants to, of course).

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

No

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
If a Pembroke made a mistake, I would use it as an opportunity for improvement and not shame. I would first solve the mistake, either by cleaning up the mess or handling any fallout from the mistake (apology to another dog owner, etc.). I then would use positive reinforcement for the opposite behavior. If that was unsuccessful long term, I would attend formal training classes.

Discipline:
I wouldn't "discipline" the dog in any physical sense. Rather, I would use treats, toys, and praise in combination with positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. When I helped train my parents' dogs, I used behavioral modification with the help of treats. For instance, one of my parents' dogs was leash reactive and would lunge at other dogs. I worked with him on a "watch" command by giving him treats for making eye contact with him both while sitting and on walks, to distract him from potential loud noises, like dogs. Then I would give him lots of praise for not barking.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Pembroke would likely spend most of his or her time in my apartment, which is a two-bedroom apartment with a dining room, living room, and back patio.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, both my roommate and I are home all day. My law school classes are entirely remote so we're home all the time.

Where would dog eat?
My adopted corgi would eat in our apartment.

Where would dog sleep:
My adopted corgi would sleep in my room in a crate or on a dog bed, whichever is better for the corgi's history. I am planning on crate training my corgi, if they are not crate-trained already. If they are singularly unsuited to a crate, I'm also happy to have the dog on a dog bed in my room, which has tons of room.

Play & exercise:
I would walk my adopted corgi with minimum two walks per day and then go to the park (weather permitting) once per day. As to play, I would have lots of toys to play with my adopted corgi and would regularly play with my corgi throughout the day.
