Who is this dog for?

I am looking for a dog for myself. I am a recently retired, active single woman. I run, swim, kayak, cycle and generally love the outdoors. My adult children are both enthusiastic dog owners but live far away. I live alone in a well maintained 3 bedroom home with a fenced yard and plan to downsize in a year or two. I have not owned a dog for about 15 years. I would like to rescue an adult dog and give a home to a dog who needs to be nurtured. I want a Corgi because they are active and energetic but not large. They also make me laugh.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Size is a huge consideration but also activity level. I have gone to look at puppies but puppies seem like too much work for the cuteness level. I would rather adapt to a dog with his/her own personality. I have been researching them and looking at them online so I know that they shed. A lot. I talk to an owner at a dog park regularly but she seems focused on the dog's pedigree. I am not. I just like the open expression on his face and his friendliness and excitement about running around. There are not many around South Bend IN. I started talking to my children about them. One lives in NYC and is a dog walker. She thought I'd love them. My other daughter has a good friend in San Francisco who has an adorable Corgi who is fat and lazy. He is funny but I want a dog who loves activity. I am aware they can have hip/back issues with steps but am planning to move to an urban area and live in a condo in the next couple of years.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
I run about 20 mies a week. I also would like to use the dog park. I kayak on the river and swim in Lake Michigan. I would like to take the dog with me. Of course, we would both wear life jackets.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I am extremely patient. I taught high school in an urban school system and loved it. I still love teenagers. I will read books on training

Discipline:
positive reinforcement with affection and treats

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Initially, we would be in my 3 bedroom single family home with a fenced yard. My plan is to move to an urban area with parks and dog parks to live in a condo. Fewer steps for me and doggie:)
