Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We were grateful to be Corgi owners for over 35 years. Our first was an AKC Registered "pick of the litter" because our dear friend's male was the stud. His name was Jacob and he lived a good long life. All of our Corgis did, although two suffered hip dysplasia. Jacob was a typical Corgi. Full of energy and a real "can-do" spirit. When he started losing his hind legs, we got him a cart and he took to it like a fish to water. Nothing would slow him down. While we had Jacob, a friend had heard of a couple that had gotten a Corgi and were not prepared for the work. And so, Joey came into our world. Joey and Jacob got along great and I credit my wife with that accomplishment because she heaped tons of attention and affection on both. Then we learned of a fellow in Chicago who had a Corgi and wanted to find a new home for him. He was a city dog, spent most of his time in his crate in the gentleman's apartment. We had to rescue him. And so the trio of Jacob, Joey and Pup-Pup (yes, that was his name!) came into our world. All males and all got along great. When we lost Jacob to the hip dysplasia and age, we rescued another corgi, Snoopy. Joey was the last to leave us and that was 4 years ago. We made the decision to let ourselves heal from the loss of these wonderful canine members of our family. We are experienced Corgi owners, experienced tenders of rescue dogs and have a beautiful home in the country.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
We have found that Corgis seem to make their own decisions! But daily walks in the park would definitely be top on the list. Outdoor play and indoor activities would also be included. It is just my wife and me at home. My wife is an artist, with a studio here on the property and I retired from my professional life and opened a small consulting business. We have the time, the desire and the knowledge that would be required to bring a rescue corgi into our home.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Dogs, like people, actually learn from their mistakes; however, if a dog makes a mistake, I would be firm and direct and provide facial cues that helped the dog to understand exactly what the mistake was. It doesn't do much good to discipline a dog when they don't know why. If on a leash, a firm lease command would be good.
Discipline: |
Leash or verbal discipline. That's the only was to treat a dog. Strong verbal commands, given directly to them so they clearly understand. If on a lead, a proper lead command would be a good way for the dog to understand their error. Never, ever, physical hits or slaps. NEVER
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
Where they would feel the most comfortable. We know that many dogs become acclimated to crates. None of the four that we had needed a crate; however, we would work with the dog to understand with what they felt most comfortable. When we had three Corgis at one time, we had separate beds for them in our bedroom. For a variety of reasons, our Corgis were not allowed in our bed because the tendency for them to jump off would be bad for their joints and ligaments.

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes..except for those trips that are errands. Plus several retailers welcome pets in their stores so, when appropriate, they would come along.
Where would dog eat? |
We have several places that would be appropriate. We have a back hall, another room called the "Morning Kitchen" and a heated garage. We typically would feed them in the morning kitchen, a large room that doesn't isolate them.
Where would dog sleep: |
Probably our bedroom….but NOT in our bed. For all the Corgis we have had, that was something I am glad we never did. Our Corgi would have their own bed but all of ours just felt secure being close,
Play & exercise: |
Since we live next to Eagle Creek Park and Reservoir, this is a wonderful place for walks or, on a warm day, a swim in the reservoir. Plus we have 2 acres and we are surrounded by woods and fields. The occasional visit to a dog park to let him experience interaction with other dogs would also be a possibility depending upon how we felt he enjoyed it. We have a dog park as a part of Eagle Creek park so that isn't a problem,
How will you exercise your dog? |
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Description of yard: |
Our home is a classic New England, post and beam home resting on two acres of land. Apple trees, cherry trees along with our own landscaping, create a natural space that is filled with shade, if necessary or to bask in the sun on a warm day. We have no swimming pool. There is a small garden pond (8' X 15') off of the patio. Our home is set at the back of our 2 acres and, although we don't have a fence, we would likely put one on the property for our own peace of mind and the dog's safety.
