Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
The Pembroke is for ourselves and future family.
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
I've always thought Corgis were adorable, and love seeing them while at parks or walking down the street. They always seem so friendly, and I love how they are described as a "loyal companion." I also admire how they are innate herding dogs. The size of Corgis is ideal for us as our first dog adoption. Although I have not had many direct experiences with the breed, I have done my research on their characteristics, preferences, and what to expect while training and raising one. My family has always had German Shepherds while growing up, so I hope that past knowledge and experience would help.
Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I imagine the day-to-day life would include walks through the neighborhood, playing outside, and training/doing tricks. Myself and my boyfriend work from home, so we would have time to give the Pembroke proper exercise and attention. I would also like to enroll in training classes, given that this is our first time adopting a dog and it would be a good learning experience for both myself and the Pembroke. I have family and friends who own dogs that I would like to socialize the Pembroke with. I imagine we would go to dog parks as well. We have a fully fenced in yard that would be perfect for playing in. Other than that, I would imagine that we would spend time together lounging around the house.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
I would stay calm but be firm about it. First I would make sure they stop whatever act it is they are doing, then I would use techniques to show that it is bad behavior, such as saying "no!" and showing disappointment in my tone and facial expressions.
Discipline: |
I definitely will not use punishment as a form of discipline. Instead, I want to define the house rules immediately and make sure the Corgi is aware. I will use positive reinforcement training to help showcase what is good vs. bad behavior. Like mentioned above, I think tone and body language goes a long way. Once the Corgi does the "good" action, they will be rewarded for doing so (such as treats, pets, high-pitched voice, etc.). I know it will take both time and patience to properly discipline.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
In our home. | ||||||

Where would dog eat? |

Where would dog sleep: |
I'm open to the corgi sleeping in the bed with us, hoping that there would be enough space. If not, we would create a bed for the corgi in our bedroom or use a crate if necessary.
Play & exercise: |
There's many options for this. I am aiming to go on daily walks at least once per day around the neighborhood. We also have a great yard that the Corgi can exercise and play in, which would we accompany them for. We'll provide lots of toys that will allow us to play and interact together. I also hope to go to parks frequently so the Corgi can interact with other people and dogs as well. Given we are both home 24/7, I want to work in daily training into the schedule as well.
