Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
Both of us. | ||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
We have a soft spot for corgis. We have rescued 4 corgis total (all from Secondhand Hounds in Minneapolis) and have fallen in love with their unique personalities and their larger than life personalities. Having rescued corgis over the years we have dealt with many issues ranging from behavioral issues like resource guarding and fear aggression to health issues like cancer, IVDD, DM, and IBD. We currently have a dog with late stage DM that gets around in her wheel cart like a champ! We've seen 2 corgis (one just recently) thru cancer, as well as worked with that same dog to overcome IBD earlier in her life. Our male corgi was very reactive to our other dogs when we got him, but after slow intros and diligent training he gets along great with his corgi pack (although we still need slow intros and lots of training with "new" dogs, including the foster we have currently).

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
A firm "No" but then redirect the behavior to something else and reward for that good behavior.
Discipline: |
We use positive reinforcement, so redirecting the bad behavior to something else and rewarding for that other good behavior. For example, if he/she barks at the doorbell, redirect them to "look" or "on your mat" and reinforce those good behaviors during the distraction.
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
He/she would spend time on the main floor of our house. Our corgis are free to roam around the house when we are not home.

People at home during the day? |
We both work at an office, but come home over lunch to let everyone out.
Where would dog eat? |
We would start feeling him/her whatever she was used to when they were adopted and then probably slowly transition over to Blue Buffalo (should their diet allow it)
Where would dog sleep: |
In our room, either on the bed if they are comfortable, or on a doggy bed on the floor, or in a crate, wherever they feel most comfortable.
Play & exercise: |
We take our dogs on a minimum to 2 walks/day (weather dependent), so they get probably 45-75 minutes of activity that way. We also do brain games and other activities inside to mentally stimulate them.
