Who is this dog for?

My husband, Aaron, and I , Melissa, are looking for a family member. The dog that joins our family will not have any expectations in terms of work. We hope to engage him in obedience/agility/herding as a way to stay well-exercised mentally and physically. Ideally, he will enjoy cuddling and relaxing, once his energy has been expended.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have researched Pembrokes extensively, but do not have much experience with the breed yet. Through our research, we are looking forward to their intelligence. We look forward to training and working with the dog to keep it mentally healthy. My husband and I are very active with long walks and hiking. We would love to have an active dog that has the energy to join us!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
In working at the Evanston Animal Shelter, I have found the most success with redirecting the attention with a learned positive behavior that can then be rewarded.

Discipline:
My first method to train through the behavior by redirecting the attention with a learned positive behavior that can then be rewarded. If the behavior attention seeking I will remove the attention by turning my back for a moment then offering a command they can follow to refocus.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
He would be spending most of his time in our condo. In our current residence, during the day, he would initially be limited to the kitchen area (tile floors) as he becomes house-trained we would expand his territory to include the living room and, eventually, the whole condo. Obviously, when we are home we hope to spend time with him.
