Questions Regarding Motivation for Adopting and Intentions
Who is this dog for? |
We adopted a corgi puppy this year Aug 2021 from a reputable breeder – Thomas Acres. Hero is a great dog but we have noticed that his love for other dogs is far more than all the love, attention, toys, and food we can provide him. There's just a spark in his eyes whenever he's around other dogs. We have a cat, Mikey who has adjusted to Hero's presence but doesn't interact with him too much (Not a single hiss since they met so that's a win!!). My partner and I were considering getting another dog.. possibly adopting from the shelter.. But we have agreed that it would be best to have a similar dog in size/temperament to Hero.. so we thought – why not get another corgi? A chance to adopt a corgi is the best case scenario as we realize raising a puppy is a lot!!
So long story short, the corgi would be Hero's sibling and our lovely third child to our home! |
||||||
Why do you want a Pembroke? |
Marc and I would love to adopt another corgi as to add to our family and have a companion for our current puppy – Hero. We live right along Lake Michigan in Chicago and we frequently go on walks, skate, and bike ride (we have not taken Hero out while we're on wheels but just stating we love outdoor time!) We love corgis for their intellect and humor. Hero always has something to say and he's so funny to listen to him talk. We're also constantly surprised with how well he has taken to clicker training mastering many different tricks (we're constantly looking up more to try and teach him). Overall our experience with Hero has been wonderful (challenging at times… but he's a puppy) but it has been really rewarding to see him grow into a healthy, funny and loving dog that he is.
My parents have also adopted a corgi back so we have spoken a lot about the breed's needs. |

Activities planned with Pembroke: |
I (Nicholas) love to go on daily walks with Hero. It's my escape from sitting at my WFH desk all day. We currently go on 3-4 walks a day. We live in an apartment complex with a large fenced yard where we play fetch and run around together. Additionally, we have many neighbors with extremely friendly dogs who will sometimes come out and play together. Being so close to Lake Michigan is also wonderful because there's so many fields, parks, dog beaches that we can take Hero out as well.
We also have a routine in that we practice our commands frequently throughout the day. Meal times we always practice old commands and work on learning new commands. Our favorite indoor game to play is hide-n-seek. We also have some enrichment puzzles for Hero as well – though we try and be interactive him as much as possible. |

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this: |
Rather than focus on reprimanding for the undesired behavior I would try and redirect and focus on praising and promoting the appropriate desired behavior! That is not to say we aren't stern when we need to be but we never yell at Hero or make him feel bad. Every situation is a learning experience and we always try to end every interaction on a positive note!
Discipline: |
Again, we wouldn't discipline per see as much as use positive reinforcement/redirection.
We have used time-outs in the past for Hero but that has only been for extremely short intervals of around 5-10 minutes just to get him away from the negative situation and try and plan a more positive learning situation. |
||||||
Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time: |
The corgi would have access to most of the house aside from our own bedroom and our bathroom. We WFH almost exclusively so we spend a great deal of time at home. We have a large dining room/living room filled with lots of natural light.
They would also have a lot of time outside! Weather and season permitting! |

House dog or outside dog? |
House dog | ||||||
People at home during the day? |
Yes, as stated above we are home most days out the week. Marc works exclusively from home and I (nicholas) can choose when I need to go into the office 2-3 times a month.
Where would dog eat? |
Hero typically eats his breakfast and lunch in the office and then we transition into the living room and dining room for dinner.
Sometimes, if need be Hero will eat a meal in his crate. We have water bowls throughout the house. |
||||||
Where would dog sleep: |
We have two crate spaces – one in the office (adjacent to the bedroom) and one in Hero's room (right across our hallway).
Hero primarily sleeps in his own room (across the hallway) as his crate fits well in it. We have a doggy camera to monitor him while he's in there and we get sound and motion alerts as well. |
||||||
Play & exercise: |
I know that corgis have a lot of energy and need exercise and stimulation to burn that energy off! Hero goes on 3-4 walks a day and we're always playing with him in the house. We can play fetch indoors or outdoors or at nearby parks.
We also have various enrichment items like food puzzles, treat-dispensing toys, snuffle mats, as well inside the house. |
||||||
How will you exercise your dog? |
Restrained to the yard | ||||||
Fenced yard? |
Yes, I have a fenced in yard.
Willing to pick up dog waste? |
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.
Willing to use a crate? |
Our fenced yard is part of our apartment building's shared courtyard. It's a large yard and the fence is spaced metal slats. For some smaller dogs they may be able to go out but for a corgi they will not fit. Sometimes if need be, we also have a 30 ft leash that we use in the yard just to have an extra fail safe to control the situation.
