Who is this dog for?

This will be our family dog. Amy will be the primary caregiver.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We adopted a rescue in 2006 and he was a corgi mix. He had funny short legs and that long body. He was such a wonderful dog — playful, silly, good with our kids (and others) and other neighborhood dogs. He was trained in a "cell dog" program before we had him, and we kept up on training and commands; he was a fast learner. He enjoyed walks and liked to stay in the yard (tied up) enjoying the sunshine while I worked in the garden. Our experience with him makes us want another Corgi. Prior to adopting him, I had done research on many breeds and looked for a rescue corgi for our family pet. Sadly, he passed at in Sept. at 15+.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We live in an Ohio suburb with beautiful treed streets and enjoy daily walks. From time to time, we enjoy hiking at local parks. We would enjoy playing with toys and a little training, too.

Aware that Pembrokes are busy, noisy dogs?
Yes

Money for basic care?

Yes

Money for unforeseen medical expenses?
Yes

Willing to house train?
Yes
Willing to do formal training? Yes

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We don't allow our pets on our furniture but instead provide their own bed. If they jumped onto the sofa, for example, I would say "no" and move them to the floor. I would provide a toy or something else to keep them busy. Later, while playing on the floor or just being good not being on the sofa, I would give them a treat or say "good boy/girl" etc. to promote the good behavior.

Discipline:
We try to focus on positive reinforcement while being good and doing what we'd like them to do! When our previous dog would try to come around the table when we were eating dinner, we would walk him over to his bed and have him lay down and stay until we were finished. That gave him a task to do; he was very responsive to it. But of course that took lots of patience and repeat teachings for sure, especially in the beginning.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most time would be spent in our home, free roaming.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes; my husband and I both work from home.

Where would dog eat?
We have a space in our laundry room (main/1st floor) that is just off of the kitchen where we keep our dog dishes with water/food.

Where would dog sleep:
Where the dog sleeps would depend on the dog and how old they are. If very young, and perhaps for any age dog in the beginning of our ownership, we may crate them at night until fully acclimated to our home. Once they are fully adapted, we may permit them to sleep on their bed and not be crated. Our last dog slept on a 2nd dog bed in our 2nd floor loft area outside of our kids' bedrooms until he was too old to safely climb the stairs. Then we moved his bed to just outside our bedroom door so we could be nearby if he needed anything as he had health issues.

Play & exercise:
We would take at least one daily walk in our neighborhood in nearly all weather except ice. We would provide a coat if needed and be mindful of extreme conditions. We would provide toys to play for both our back yard and in the house. Most of our neighbors have dogs, so if they got along, we could have them play together. Our last dog loved our next door neighbor's former dog, and we'd have them play in their fenced back yard with us. (Our back yard is fenced on 3 sides but not enclosed from the prop line to the sides of our home. We have a tie-out but may consider fencing in at the sides.)

How will you exercise your dog?

Description of yard:

We live in Wadsworth, which is an Ohio suburb. We have a grass front yard with a cement driveway and a large oak and 2 smaller trees. If in the front, we may use a tie out so our dog can "hang out" with us while working in the yard. Our back yard is grass with the exception of two small raised garden beds with gravel around them. Our tie out is kept away from the garden area. Since the back yard is sunny, we are careful to make sure there is shade available as we have warmer days. We do have landscaping around the home with shrubs, ornamental trees and bulbed flowers such as iris.

Household members:
{Describe all the people who live in your home, include names, ages and interests. For example, Mary Smith, 29, Enjoys cooking, dog training, gardening and running.:75}

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Amy

Willing to train children?
Yes, our primary reason for adopting a dog back in 2006 was so our children would know the joys and work of taking care of a pet. Now we are a family of adults!

Regarding the answer below about allergies — we learned after adopting our former dog that both Michael and Max are allergic to dog dander. After consulting our allergist, we followed his rules and all was fine: we don't let our dog on our furniture, in our bedrooms (for sleeping), vacuum frequently and have a regular bath schedule for our pet.

Any allergies?

One or more family members might be allergic to dogs.

Current pets:

{Please list and describe all of the pets that currently live in your home, including the name, type, age, sex and whether it is neutered. For example, Lenny, komodo dragon, 3 years old, not neutered.:80}

N/A – We don't have any other pets.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
