Who is this dog for?

Our family.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love the quirky fun and very stubborn nature of the breed. Our daughter has a 5 year old corgi and we have our 3 year old. We researched the breed prior to my daughter getting her dog and we then had to have our own. We have always wanted a second corgi dog and would love to rescue a corgi in need of a good home. We understand they shed constantly and love to "protect" us from every little noise- but that is part of their charm. Our boy loves to howl at the wind;)

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We walk our boy daily. He doesn't like to play fetch or chase toys, but we have time and a huge yard to do these activities in. My corgi dislikes car rides but i would love to take a boy who liked them in the car any time I go for a drive. We live on almost 2 acres and it is protected by an invisible fence. We have a lot of snow here and our corgi loves to play in the snow. Our current boy is a bit of a couch potato, but I think he'd enjoy having a new friend to play with.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
same as below. We understand it may take time for a corgi to acclimate to new home or be housetrained fully. We would implement crating while away if needed until trained. Treats seem to be really helpful for reinforcing good behavior.

Discipline:
We use sharp voice and physical removal from whatever the issue is- like inappropriate chewing or chasing the cat. We did obedience with our corgi puppy with mixed results. We use a baby enclosure for feeding as he is food protective.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Once he was known to be housetrained he would be free in the house most of the time. We don't kennel our corgi at night or when we are gone as he is well-behaved.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Most of the time.

Where would dog eat?
same as our other dogs- blue buffalo is the brand he likes. If our rescue needed a special diet that would be fine.

Where would dog sleep:
In theory on the floor in a dog mat but our other corgi spends his nights on his own pillow next to me. Probably right next to him;)

Play & exercise:
As noted we have a large fence protected yard. Our dogs are out multiple times a day and get walks daily. We live on a quiet almost mile around cul de sac so thay have safe quiet places for leash walking. There is a dog park in our town as well.

Who is this dog for?

For both Paul & Joy Chen, living in a home owned by them.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love the Queen's Corgi's! Joy has extensive dog sitting for a friend's Pembroke Welsh Corgi (Jenny) for over 10 years. Paul's sister has owned 2 Pembroke Welsh Corgi's, a male (Mikey – Deceased) and a female (Belle – currently 11 years old). Our experience with both of Paul's sister's Corgi's were very positive and loving. Paul owned a pure bred Long Haired Dachsund (Male – Phred) for 15 years before his passing in 2005. Small dog care experience is very high with both Paul & Joy.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We live in an active new subdivision (3+ years old) which has many paths and greenspace. We live in fact around the largest green space in the neighborhood (our backyard is adjacent to it) where other dogs (leashed) can play. Paul & Joy are very active taking daily walks around the neighborhood and avid Travel Trailer Campers during the summer months (6-8 trips mostly in-state). We would love to introduce our new Pembroke to camping and light hiking.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We believe in using Positive Reinforcment for when the dog obeys effectively and to encourage good behavior. Using rewards (ie. extra praise, treats and toys.) is a big part of this. For mistakes, we would withold treats, toys and/or move the dog to another part of the house or put it in a crate for a "time-out".

Discipline:
Like mentioned above, for mistakes, we would discipline negative behavior by witholding treats, toys and/or move the dog to another part of the house or put it in a crate for a "time-out".

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
The Corgi would spend most of his/her time in our loving home. Joy works 12 hour shifts (3 days per week) while Paul works 8-9 hours per day (5 days per week). When we are not home, the Corgi would be crated.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes on certain days of the week. Joy has days off during the week (depending upon her RN schedule). Paul can work from home on occasion. During any of these times, the Pembroke would be free to roam within the house.

Where would dog eat?
Near the mud room and kitchen, would be the corgi's water and food bowls.

Where would dog sleep:
Probably in the master bedroom with Paul & Joy. A pet bed would be provided. If the corgi wants to sleep on the main bed, then accomodations would be made to provide this (ie. a small step near the bed so the dog wouldn't have to jump high).

Play & exercise:
Daily play and exercise would be encouraged. We live near a paved walking path that we use daily.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Description of yard:

We have a large stamped concrete patio in the back yard. We are one of several homes that are in an oval shape surrounding a very large public green space (3+ acres) with paved walking trails and green grass. We don't own a swimming pool, but the neighborhood has one that's completely fenced in. Dogs are not allowed in the pool area. All dogs are required to have leashes when using the green space and/or walking trails OR contained in a fenced-in or "invisible" fenced-in area

We would require a corgi that gets along with other dogs as we have an English Cream Dachshund and also is friendly with kids because we have a 1 year old and a 9 year old. We know that our 1 year old is still way too young to be around any dog by herself. Our current dog is not the fondest of her, so we do keep them separate for the most part because she can be too rough for him and he is not the biggest fan of that. If they are in the same room together, we make sure that she leaves him alone.

Who is this dog for?

It would be for our entire family.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I really think this is a great breed for families. They are super smart and easy to train. They have a great energy level for an active family and super sweet dogs all around. I love that they are a smaller breed, but don't act like the typical teacup dogs. I think a corgi would be a great friend to our dachshund as they seem to have similar personalities, but corgi's are a little bit nicer than dachshunds. I know that they can be a bit stubborn at times, but we have plenty of experience with stubborn dogs as dachshunds can also be VERY stubborn.
Obviously, they are cuter than all get out! I have only met a few corgi's, but each one has stolen my heart!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We would go on walks and make time to give him or her the exercise and play time that they need. It really depends on what the particular dog likes to do. Our current dog is a big homebody now, so he is not very into walks anymore. He had back surgery abut three years ago and has a hard time walking on a leash for more than a block or so.

Do you have a veterinarian?

Yes

Vet contact info:
{If yes, please provide contact information including the vet’s name, clinic name, street address, city, state, zip, and phone. Also include the website if there is one.:52}

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would handle it with patience. You can't expect perfection from a dog. You just have to show them the correct way of doing things and you may have to show them over and over.

Discipline:
I only really use a stern voice and if it is a really bad offence, I would put them in their crate for a time-out. I do not and never will use any sort of force on a dog. I don't agree with the collars that have the spikes on them or doing things like rubbing their nose in pee because of an accident. We can't expect perfection out of dogs 100% of the time.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In our home or our fenced in back yard. Depending on the dog, when we are not home, it will either be in a crate or free to roam if it is ok being in the house alone. We have to crate our current dog because if he is left out, he will pee. We have tried to give him several chances like when we just need to run a quick errand, Our dog that passed in June was free to be out while we were not home. She never even tried to get into anything and rarely had an accident in the house. Our dogs are a part of our family, so the dog would be with us most of the time.

People at home during the day?
No, but my husband works 5 minutes from home and will stop by around lunch time to let our dog outside. I also work from home sometimes.

Where would dog eat?
In our kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
In me and my husband's bed with our dachshund.

Play & exercise:
Me and my husband enjoy going on walks frequently. We also have a fenced in backyard where it can run around as much as it would like.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

Yes, I have a fenced in yard.

Willing to pick up dog waste?
Yes, I will clean up after my dog.

Willing to use a crate?
It is the typical chain linked fence that encloses our backyard.

Everyone in household agrees about adopting a corgi?
Yes, everyone agrees and wants to adopt a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

May we do a home visit?

Yes, I will allow LPWCR representatives to inspect my home prior to allowing me to adopt a Pembroke.

Who will be responsible for the adopted corgi’s care?
Angela and Christopher

Willing to train children?
Yes, we are currently going through that with our 1 year old. We are showing her how to be gentle. Obviously, she does not quite grasp that yet, so we make sure that she is never left alone with our dog. If they are in the same room we make sure that they are separate as she does not understand how to be gentle. She LOVES dogs. In fact, her first word besides mama and dada was puppy. She goes nuts when she sees them, but she doesn't get what a gentle pet yet is and that puppies don't want to be squeezed. We just keep reinforcing how to be gentle and one day she will understand.

Any allergies?

No one is allergic.

Current pets:

{Please list and describe all of the pets that currently live in your home, including the name, type, age, sex and whether it is neutered. For example, Lenny, komodo dragon, 3 years old, not neutered.:80}

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes, sometimes there is a warming up period. Thankfully, Jack has always been friendly to other dogs, especially ones that are closer in size to him.

Lifetime commitment to Pembroke?

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Understand no guarantees?

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.

Who is this dog for?

Myself

Why do you want a Pembroke?
Due to living in a smaller house, we are looking for a small dog but need a big personality! I have many friends who have corgis and have a ton of fun playing with them when I visit. They truly are a big dog in a small package.

The big trait of the corgi that sticks out to me is the small legs (which I'm short at 5'3" so I can keep up with a small dog) and big butt. I am a "Butt Muncher". I love to give butt scratches, mostly because I love to see tails wag. While corgis don't have much of a tail, they still wiggle their behind, which is even cuter!

I understand that due to their elongated body, corgis can suffer from a multitude of back issues like Degenerative Myelopathy (genetic), various Disk Diseases (weight and activity controlled) and hip displaysia (can be weight controlled). But, I do know that they can also suffer from Retinal Atrophy, of which there is no cure for. (This is what my cat experienced)

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Well of course walks! Lots of walks! We have a big back yard to play in but exercise is key to maintaining proper weight. (not only for a dog but for me as well) And, what dog doesn't love a kiddy pool on a hot summer day? We also travel from my home to my fiance's parent's home in Indy quite often so having a travel buddy would be fun. And, of course your typical fetch, teach tricks, and overall provide lots of lovin's!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Use it as a teaching moment. First teach that the mistake was a mistake with firm words. Then teach the proper action with positive reinforcement.

Then clean up the mess and laugh about it.

Discipline:
Positive reinforcement with a firm, even tone. Clicker training. Being aware of what the dog is doing to stop negative activity before it occurs and enforce positive behavior. (a dog is a toddler after all)

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
with the family! I'm not one for crates, while they have their purpose, I'm am an advocate that a pet is a family member and should be treated as such. So the dog will be allowed in every room (including the bathroom while I'm in there). I also not opposed to the dog sleeping with us in our big bed. When no one is home, then the crate may be used but I will more than likely quarantine to a specific room over enforcing the use of the crate.

People at home during the day?
Yes, except weekends. We may spend up to 8 hours out of the house. (the 8 hours time is very rare. The most really is 4-5 hours)

Where would dog eat?
Int he kitchen where the pet food was with prior pets.

Where would dog sleep:
While a crate will be available, the corgi is welcome in the rooms. We will provide a bed to sleep on in every room and will allow sleeping in bed with us.

Play & exercise:
We have a large yard and we will allow as much "fun time" as the corgi wishes to have. I am mobile in my job so I can work from inside or outside on the back deck. The corgi will get a walk at minimum once a day and of course play is encouraged inside when it is hot out.

How will you exercise your dog?
Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Fenced yard?

No, I don’t have a fenced in yard.

Description of yard:

Yard is a big connecting yard with the neighbors currently. The neighbors have all had dogs at one point and we have always shared the yards. One neighbor currently has 2 dogs. If needed we would put up a small fence to help "restrain" a corgi. Our yard has a big maple in the center that offers a ton of shade and a big deck. We have a shed in the back of the yard and 2 rose bushes next to it. We also have a Twisted Filbert in front of the shed.

Who is this dog for?

This Pembroke will be a companion to my Doogie, Bassett/Cocker/lab mix,; 4 yrs old; about 50lbs…very sweet, maybe not so smart, black bassett with very very short, bowl legs, ; alabama rescue; cut off tail. I adopted Doogie three years ago as a companion to my rottweiler. I had to put my rottie, Lilly, down three months ago for bone cancer. It has been tough as they loved each other. Doogie is very affectionate. I am thinking that a corgi would be a good buddy…female…adult or whatever you would recommend. Cannot afford high price..am hoping for a rescue. I have a nice home in Neenah, WI; fenced in back yard with six foot cedar fence…landscaped, so lots of fun chasing paths for the two dogs. Hoping you can help me. Cathy Locke; 920-729-9591; I am home full time, and almost retired. need a medium energy dog if possible. they will play together

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I know little…except they are adorable and seem to have the mix of personality and size that I am seeking for a friend for my Doogie.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Not very exciting…I am home all day, working during the day. Doogie and my Pembroke would be best friends and sleep together or play or chase outside and try to catch rabbits or chipmonks or whatever great adventure they would have. They would have the run of my house; rawhide bones to chew; toys to play with….and we all cuddle together at night in bed. Not exciting but a loving home to have.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I would tell her, no, and take she and Doogie right outside. and then clean it up. Doogie learned quickly from Lilly and does not ever make a mistake.

Discipline:
No. Off. I do my best. I have trouble with Doogie and jumping on visitors. I am not the strongest leader but I do keep to a routine and praise their success.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
At home here in my home. Doogie and Lilly sleep on a day bed in my office during the day…unless we are outside in my back yard playing etc. Evening in my den, with TV . They will have the run of my house. I have a two bedroom ranch, spacious, 1800 sq ft. with large fenced in, back yard and garden. Can send videos.
