I am used to being able to pick up my dog, if needed. So, I am looking for a dog 20lbs or less, definitely not more than 25lb. I would like a dog with no pre-existing health conditions and is potty trained. Our previous corgis were not barkers, but I have met some who are. Incessant barking I do not want.

Who is this dog for?

Me. I am a 62-year-old single person. I live on Park Point, a 4-mile beach, in Duluth, MN. I own my own house and have a fully fenced in backyard. I recently lost Victoria, my 9-year-old long-haired chihuahua, to congestive heart failure. Growing up, my parents and I raised two Pembroke Welsh corgis. They were from the Sandyshire kennel in Michigan.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We were lucky to have had two amazing corgis. They were noble and very loyal. They were friendly and very loving. They were very intelligent and lots of fun. There was something magical about them. They had temperament of a big dog in a small body.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Take long walks on the beach and Lake walk.
Take car trips to my summer cottage
Play fetch with balls and toys
Be able to massage and brush both teeth and coat
I have a small agility course, if the dog is interested.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
I calmly, in a low tone, say "NO". Then I redirect their attention. I have also used coins in a soda can. When shaken, the noise gets the dog's attention which makes it easier then to redirect them.

Discipline:
Redirecting the Pembroke's attention to a suitable behavior or activity is best, as previously mention. To calm a dog, ignoring it works for me. I have been fortunate to own dogs with very few behavioral problems.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With me, in the house, on walks, in the car, at my cottage.

Yes, I am retired.

Where would dog eat?
The adopted corgi would eat in the kitchen with her own food bowl.

Where would dog sleep:
When the Pembroke first arrived, they would sleep in their kennel beside my bed. Later they would sleep in their own bed next to mine. Our previous corgis did not wish to sleep on the bed it was too warm for them.

Play & exercise:
Lots or beach and Lake walk walks. Playing fetch with toys and balls inside and out. And, if they are interested, running my agility course. I would say around two hours a day would be the average.

Both on leash and restrained to the yard

Who is this dog for?

The Pembroke would be for our family. We hope to find a corgi who is friendly with our boys, ages 7.5 and 11 years old. We also have a 6 year old dog, Robbie, who we adopted from TAILS five years ago. Robbie is a shepard/doberman mix and is a docile, sweet and loving dog, who would welcome the company of another sweet animal. We have a large fenced yard in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
My son Benjamin loves Corgis. He loves the distinctive energy and good looks of Corgis. And we are a family who loves dogs.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Take him to the forrest preserve with our boy scout troupe. Walk him with Robbie. Take him to Blackwell with Robbie and the boys.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Animals make mistakes and with each pet it's different how you would handel the situation. It would also depend on the type of mistake. Sometimes fixing the mistake is based on the owner being proactive, for example if the dog keeps peeing in the house maybe you need to take the dog out more and provide rewards when the behavior exhibited is the correct one.

Discipline:
I don't know. I guess that is something I will have to learn, the appropriate type of discipline.

Who is this dog for?

My kids have been researching dogs and breeds for over a year and have decided on a Pembroke. I told them that I will not get a dog unless it is a rescue and luckily I found your site. I have three kids ages 10, 12, and 16. I am a stay at home mom and we just moved to Iowa, so I have plenty of time to invest into taking care of a dog. (There is not much to do in Iowa, compared to Houston!) We would LOVE to be placed with a dog and can get one at any time. We are of course willing to drive to pick up.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We have done research. We have read that they are good with families and and other pets such as cats. We know that they are very active, and so is our family.
Here is the paper my 10 year old wrote on Corgi's-
They are good with children and very playful. Corgis are also healthy dogs. They bark quite a bit. They love walks. You just need to walk them half an hour on the morning and night. They also rarely get dirty or make a mess. Corgis also get along well with cats. They live up to 12-14 years old. They are also helping dogs. They are also suppose to be easy to train. They are also sweat like cats. They can be a little aggressive when you put them in suits or costumes. 🙂 They eat whole grains and vegetables. They also like eating bones. They are super friendly with strangers, and they don't mind loud noises. They are super cute and once you get one you will love it. – Written by Madeline Turner.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
We would walk it – A LOT!
My son would like to play fetch with it, if they do that.
We would like to spend time out doors with him or her.
We love lazy animals too, so it would be great if he/she likes to cuddle sometimes.
If our dog likes to travel in cars we would like to take him/her to parks with us.
We have a cat, but are looking for a dog who would be an energetic, loving part of our family.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
We would immediately take any dog to training classes so we would know how to appropriately deal with the dog.

Discipline:
We have never owned a dog. We have always had cats, so we will have a lot to learn. I do however have three kids and if I learned to handle them, I think I can educate myself on how to have a dog. 🙂 I am very aware that, especially initially a dog can be very high maintenance and we area all ready to take on that responsibility.

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, I am a stay at home mom and am currently writing a book. I do this at the house also, so someone is home most of the time.

Where would dog eat?
We have our cat's bowl in our kitchen. We would need to work out the best place for our corgi to eat. My guess would be on the opposite side of our kitchen from the cat's corner.

Where would dog sleep:
That would be up to the corgi! I am sure all the kids would love the dog to sleep in their rooms and honestly, so would I!!!

Play & exercise:
Because we are outside all the time, this should be no problem. We also plan on doing walks before school, after school, and after dinner. We already do some of these walks anyway, so now the walks will be more fun.

Who is this dog for?

Our family. Mostly for my children. We currently have 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs and 2 cats (rescue). We used to have Sir Max, Pembroke. He lived to just short of his 14th birthday. My children are constantly asking for a corgi. They LOVE animals, as do I. We would like to add a Corgi to our 'zoo'. 🙂

Why do you want a Pembroke?
As previous commentary, we had Max the Corgi for almost 14 years. I love the corgi personality. Independent, active, loving and yet can be stubborn. LOL. I love that they are protective and happy. Our Max was so smart. He LOVED our family farm and would run and run. My vet is also a corgi family (they have 3) and we share a love for their active and pleasant loving personalities.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Daily we have a fenced yard. We also walk each day. We live in a neighborhood but right on the edge of the 'country'. Our family also has a 160 acre farm about 2 hours north of where I live. We go up there about monthly. All our dogs LOVE the farm and roam around with each other.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Swiftly move to remove them from the situation and replace. i.e. chewing on furniture, I would move the dog to their 'park it' space and replace with a bone or toy.

Discipline:
I do NOT use significant discipline. I use more positive response. My dogs usually know when I am not happy by simply using a strong, louder voice. I work training through out their lives. And, I work my own training. 🙂

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
With us. We travel as a pack. Ha. My animals are house animals. Or in my fenced back yard, a walk or the farm. I always bring a dog with me when I am out and about. Unless of course it is wicked hot. Then I leave them home in the air conditioner.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
This will be my 4th PWC. I love the breeds' "smarts" and attitude. I started with Border collies and can't image going outside the herding group. I switched to the PWC when I turned 50 in the mistaken belief that, because of their short legs, I would be able to keep up with them. I competed (but not titled) my Borders' in agility & flyball. I have "practiced/trained" agility with all my Pems.

currently, lots of walks and backyard agility

Depends upon the situation. I am a positive trainer, I hold a current CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed). I train according to ABC (Antecedent Behavior Consequence) meaning the A and/or C needs to change to affect behavior modification. I use lure & reward methods (what gets rewarded gets repeated). I use corrections…non-physical and humane. I refer you to the statement of ethics of the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT)

Why do you want a Pembroke?
In October of 1996, while I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Partizansk, Russia, I adopted Charlie, a two-month old fluff ball who turned out to be a Corgi mix. He resembled a Corgi in many ways: short legs; long body; large, round front paws that turned outward; large pointed fox-like ears; alert, intelligent expression. He may have been mixed with a Sheltie or Collie because his coat was silky rather than bristly, and he was less apt to roundness, more slender, but in most every other way, he looked and acted like a Corgi. People who knew their Corgis would sometimes stop us when we were out for a walk and ask what sort of Corgi he was. Many wanted to know if he was a long-haired Corgi and where they could get one like him. Charlie was a wonderful companion. He was playful, intelligent, a loyal friend and we had many travels and adventures together. He lived nearly 19 years, before his struggles with kidney disease and arthritis in his hind legs finally became too much for him, and I had to put him to sleep in June, 2015. There were many things I loved about Charlie, foremost among them was his energy and spirit. He was energetic, loved to chase the tennis ball, was always up for a walk. He got a lot of mileage out of his short legs. He was an intelligent, playful little guy, even in his later years, and he was always up for playing around with his squeaky toys or ball. He was a good watchdog, a dedicated protector of the grounds and friendly and outgoing on the whole. He had a lot of spirit and charm and he was quite popular no matter where I lived. Charlie was a bit wary of children or those who approached him by looming over the top of him; he appreciated it if new friends got down on his level and let him sniff them out first. He could also be a bit territorial, particularly with his food and some toys, but his willfulness was part of his headstrong character. He could play well with some dogs, but others he was wary of, a bit standoffish. Nobody's perfect. Charlie was an important part of my life for many years, and I would love to adopt another Corgi or Corgi mix. I have done plenty of research into the breed both during the time I had Charlie and after, and I know a fair amount about their history, their vocation, their personality traits and common ailments. After two years, I think I'm ready to adopt another Corgi, to give it a good home with plenty of love and attention.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
With my Corgi, I would go on walks both around the neighborhood and in the local parks. There are several local places Charlie and I enjoyed, from wooded trails to open areas for chasing the tennis ball. If this Corgi is up for it, we would probably check out the dog park (Charlie wasn't very interested) and play with some of the other dogs. My apartment complex has a dog run, as well as plenty of green space for shorter walks. We would certainly have a number of indoor activities, too–chew toys and tug-of-war toys for playing. Charlie was named for Steinbeck's poodle in Travels With Charley, and so I would hope to take my next Corgi on road trips, as Charlie and I did, and have plenty of adventures together.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Usually with a stern command and some indication of what the command is related to. For example, if the corgi got into the garbage, I would take the corgi to the strewn out garbage and give a verbal reprimand. If the corgi had an accident in the house, I would take the corgi out and praise it if it uses the bathroom.

Discipline:
Verbal reprimands, time-outs, positive reinforcement.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
Most of the time would be spent at my 2 BR apartment, but a fair amount of time would be spent at my girlfriend's house, which is on roughly 2 acres of land

People at home during the day?
No. I teach, so my current schedule means I am in class from roughly 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. four days per week. I would be home most afternoons and evenings.

Where would dog eat?
In the dining room outside the kitchen.

Where would dog sleep:
I would get a dog bed for the corgi and keep the bed in the bedroom or living room.

Play & exercise:
Charlie got three walks per day: one in the morning, one when I got home from work and one in the evening. On the weekends, we might have more outside time at the park or in the dog run. My new corgi would have a similar schedule, depending on its energy level. Charlie and I would have playtime indoors, too, at least once per day, depending on his mood and his energy level.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I have never owned a corgi, but I love the big dog in a little body aspect. I love that they seem to be a very intelligent breed and are willing to work and be trained to do various jobs.

Activities planned with Pembroke:
Currently our lab does a lot of swimming so we would try to do activist with that. Also would like to try therapy dog or good canine citizenship.

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
Correct the mistake and train it to do the correct thing. Example, if the dog is mouthing while playing, we will defer the mouthing to a toy instead of a hand of a person. Also saying no

Discipline:
Just redirecting the bad behavior to use a good one Instead.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In the house. The dog will not be outside unless someone is outside with them or supervised. Otherwise the dog will be kenneled until we know we can trust it alone.
