Yes, we also have our "son" Hennessy who is 13.5. We got him around 10-12 weeks old. He is a corgi/Shi tzu/terrier mix and I had just moved to the US from Canada and wanted a companion for travelling back & forth and because I couldn't legally work in the US for a year. We were fortunate that he only needed 1 training class and took to it quite well, he was never crate trained though because he honestly didn't need it. He has had both his back legs operated on (ACL in both over the course of 1.5 years) and then this past November herniated a disc in his back and had spinal surgery. He forgets how old he is sometimes! He has had anxiety most of his life which started after being in the back seat of the car and someone unexpectedly rear ending us. We have tried many natural remedies, but they didn't really work for him – thundercoat helped some. Storms, rain, fireworks, loud noises, too many people – he's not a fan! So we do everything to avoid that or protect him from them. We even make a point of going to Canada over the July 4th holiday so he doesn't have to deal with the fireworks. However, he does take Prozac daily after our doggie daycare kept recommending it. He also has doggie valium for the really bad storms, bad days, etc. It works well for us. I could talk about Hennessy forever! When we had our daughter in 2009 (he was born in 2004) he basically ignored her for the most part for the first 2 years of her life..then he was very good with her/patient. Doesn't pull on the leash if she is holding it (to this day), but if we are, he wants to go quickly 🙂 Also, we loved Hennessy so much, my mother-in-law adopted his biological brother, born almost a year later and he is still loving being the little brother! They see one another regularly, Enzo favors a Shi Tzu more, and his personality is far more laid back then Hennessy's. In the fall of 2014 we adopted what they thought was a corgi/lab mix from a shelter in Richmond, IN because we wanted to have a friend for Hennessy in his older years but he doesn't always want to play as much..he has his long time "friends" on our street, but can be a bit of a grumpy pants sometimes. Our neighbors got a puppy for the same reason for their golden retriever…well, you should have seen Hennessy with that puppy! So sweet! So we decided to try to find a puppy. So Stig came home with us in Nov of 2014. It was definitely more challenging than with Henny…a) potty training in the cold months! b) working full time and c) having a child. But we managed, did a fair amount of training and like Hennessy when he was much younger, went to doggie daycare once a week to burn some energy. Hennessy and Stig would play, or Hennessy would "tolerate" Stig 🙂 Their personalities were very different. Henny is very independent, Stig the opposite! We crated her at first, so she's crate trained, but I'm not a huge fan, so we only did it when necessary after she got to the point where we could leave her alone. Fast forward to November 2016…I came home from work and Hennessy was clearly in distress and thus, hospital stay, MRI, surgery…when he came home, Stig went and stayed with my mother-in-law and Enzo so as to no injure Henny in his recovery. Hennessy has done relatively well since his surgery, but we made the decision to let STig stay with my mother-in-law because we felt due to her energy and size (she's about 10lbs heavier) we strongly feared she could hurt him. And my mother-in-law actually enjoyed having her because Enzo played a lot with her. It was the right thing for everyone overall. They only live a mile away though, so we see them every week and Hennessy stays with them if we are gone more than a few hours and vice versa. We also have a cat…she's tolerant of dogs. Would like Hennessy to play with her, but he's rather indifferent to her!

Who is this dog for?

Us 🙂 and our daughter Madeline (age 8)

Why do you want a Pembroke?
We love corgis. Their demeanor, their independence, their young energy/love, their desire to please and quirky personalities. Since both our dog and the 2 my mother-in-law have are all part corgi, I'd say we're pretty well educated with them. We're familiar with potential medical issues they can have (back problems) and are prepared to give them the medical attention they need.

Positive reinforcement seems to work best…training.

A scolding if only you catch them in the act, take away a toy briefly, figure out why it happened….usually they're either bored or need some exercise.
