Who is this dog for?

He/she would be for myself. I would love to add a rescued corgi to my little family.

Why do you want a Pembroke?
I absolutely love their attitudes! They remind me so much of Jack Russell's in attitude and I love Jack's! I like intelligent dogs who love to learn and are active as I am an avid hiker. I have only met a few corgis personally, but the ones I have met have been absolutely amazing. They are energetic, a little yappy, but always playful and friendly. Yes, I have done plenty of research on the breed, as I believe education before you bring a dog home is extremely important so that you know what you're getting into and also so that the dog ends up in a forever home. They are a herding breed, so they need a job/lots of exercise or they will get bored and get into trouble- a lot like jacks! They shed quite a bit and will need to be groomed/brushed often- my lab sheds like crazy! I work at a shelter/rescue and so I am no stranger to dog hair all over me!

Activities planned with Pembroke:
There is a dog park at my apartment complex that I would love to take them to when they are ready, I would love to bring them hiking often, walks around the neighborhood/college campus, maybe bring them to the barn my horse is at- if the corgi can handle that environment as my other dogs can't and prefer to not be around horses. They would be a companion, as I do not plan to do agility or anything of that sort, but more of a friend to bring with me on adventures!

Will handle mistakes Pembroke makes like this:
It depends on the situation. Mistakes are okay to make as they are learning opportunities; my dogs make mistakes daily. I would handle it calmly, but assertively.

Discipline:
I believe in both positive and negative reinforcement. Treats, praise and humane scolding.

Where would Pembroke spend the majority of the time:
In my apartment with my dogs and I, or outside with us. When I am at work or school they would either be crated in a large, open wire crate, or loose in my living room – depending on if they are house trained or not. Both of my dogs are house trained, but one tends to get into chewing things if I am away at work/school for a few hours so he is crated while I am gone, and the other is loose. He is only crated when no one is home and short periods of time/few hours.

House dog or outside dog?

House dog

People at home during the day?
Yes, periodically. My boyfriend and I have different work and school schedules, and so we are at home multiple times a day more than we are away.

Where would dog eat?
It would eat in my living room where my other two dogs eat as long as it feels comfortable eating around them. They do eat separately – one outside of the crate and one inside their crate. I do not feed them directly next to eachother because I feel that even though they get along it is safer to keep dogs spread apart when eating.

Where would dog sleep:
I allow my dogs to sleep in my bed with me, although I do have a few dog beds available for them. They often sleep on the floor, and the dogs beds when it is warm, but generally they sleep with me and I allow that. If the dog prefers to have a crate to sleep in I can set that up as well with a bed in the crate in my bedroom so they are not left away from us.

Play & exercise:
As I have said before, I really enjoy hiking, and so in any weather where hiking is possible I will expend energy that way. My complex also has a large dog park that is open all day, and into the night. I have a fairly large apartment, 1000 sq feet, and when the weather is bad my two dogs run from the front to the back until they're exhausted! I also have lots of toys always available to play with, and so the dogs tend to wear each other out when possible! When the weather is nice I also enjoy taking my dogs for walks around town, or around campus so they get exposure around other people- of which they absolutely love strangers!

Current pets:

Current pets dog friendly?

Yes, all of our current pets are friendly toward dogs.

Are you willing to work on it if your new dog doesn’t get along with your current pets right away?
Yes, I work with both of my dogs on behavior. When I first introduced Nixon into my home there was a long adjustment period for my older dog, Channing. All was worked through and now they love eachother, play together, sleep on eachother, and eat in close proximity. I allow my dogs to correct each other within reason, but they are always being monitored socially so that if an issue were to arise I could be there to resolve it.

Yes, I am willing to commit to this dog for the rest of its life.

Return to Lakeshore if unable to care for Pembroke?
Yes, I will only surrender my adopted corgi to LPWCR if I am unable to care for it.

Yes, I understand that there are no guarantees regarding the condition, health, behavior or personality of the Pembroke I adopt.

Carefully considered the pluses and minuses of adopting a pet?
Yes, I have carefully thought out my decision to adopt a Pembroke and am willing to deal with the consequences.
